What memory comes in w3j - Samsung, Corsair, Kingston,Cruicial or...?
thank you !
-
Pricepoint has been changed to 1849$ for W3J looks like this might be the final Config.
http://www.proportable.com/asusensemble.html -
I believe the RAM is Kingston, but don't quote me
-
Thanks Coriolis !
I'd prefer to buy exactly the same RAM. Does it matter ?
Reviews for Corsair 1 gb DDR2-667 at newegg.com are not very good as I expected. ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/CustratingReview.asp?item=N82E16820145012) This memory is available at proportable too. So I was thinking to buy it together with w3j first.
Is Corsair as good as people talk about it? Just need a second opinion.
What is the difference b/w 200 pin and 240 pin ?
Thank you very much ! -
Thanks kierkegaard,
All things considered I think getting one now is a good option, then once Vista comes out, give it another 6 months for fixes etc, will be well into late 2007 or 2008 before its time for an upgrade, anyhow the current Duo core will run vista, and as you mention may not want to upgrade anyway, from what I have heard vista may not run on integrated graphics, so it may be a resource hog anyway? will have to wait and see.
1320 pounds = $2300 UDS (using XE.com currency converter), considering the listing price at Proportable of $1849, thats 451 good reasons to get one in the US, with that extra cash, I could pay to max out RAM and other goodies.
Although, I will either be heading to the states in 3 weeks or end of June (depends on how the visa situation pans out), dont know if I can hold out till end of June though
By the way those of you looking at getting a cheaper W3V with the release of the W3J will be pleased to know that in a recent review in whatlaptop magazine here in the UK.
The W3V had a 1.86 Ghz Pentuim 750, 4200rpm drive and it was so well tuned it got a BoPac Mobile Mark score of around the 250 mark (from memory)
But the comment was something along the lines, that it was the fastest Mobile Mark score tested for a laptop so far (under yonah) and only marginally behind the latest Dual core notebooks. and it whipped other budget machines that had faster 7200 rpm drives and faster processors scoring around the 170 mark, I was impressed.
(I would have to check as the review was a few months ago and the mag is at work, i could look it up if anyone is interested).
Just goes to show just slappping fast components together does not make a fast PC, its as much about drivers and system configuration, so I dont mind waiting if its worth it.
Good to hear US is getting the 1.83Ghz Duo, although I would like the T2500 2.0Ghz or the T2600 2.26 Ghz.
Anyone else prefer faster? -
W3J is already avaliable now on the online shopping center like Yahoo, Pchome in Taiwan. See my new thread!!
-
Last I saw Vista was requiring 64mb dedicated card and at least 256 ram. I share the same concerns about it being a resource hog, not to mention, its optional interface (can't think of the name) will be more demanding if I remember correctly.
I think everyone wants a faster processor or the choice of having a faster one but taking price into consideration I think the 1.8 is perfect - especially when considering it looks like we (the U.S.) are getting it for only a $50 increase in price. -
Aero is its 3D interface.
-
I still don't understand why people are buying into vista. It has little to no pratical functionality over Windows XP/2000. Whatever small value it does hold over windows xp/2000 is easily erased by being a massive resource hog (I always though Apple's OSes and Linux become MORE effeicent with each new OS instead of less), replacement of old hardware (HDCP video cards/monitors), expensive and the DRM fun-land Vista is going to be.
-
Also add the fact that it will take time to get real 64 bit software out there. If vista comes out this year I will be very surprised.
-
Anyone know if the W3J have a optional battery that can go in the optical drive bay?
-
NSF, are you looking for this - http://www.proportable.com/detail.aspx?ID=108 ?
-
Answer is Yes.
-
Wow im dumb.. i didn't read the whole page, i must of been so exited that i didn't read all teh specs on it..
-
Yeah, personally I think Vista will be a bit of a hog, well considering the jumps from 98 to 2000 to XP, its a sure thing.
and the second battery in the drive bay, I have used this set up before and love it, adds greatly to the battery life, especially when you have both batteries in there at the same time. -
Ahhh..the hot swap..something else to add to the greatness of the w3j
I was wondering how many of those who owns the w3j will likely buy the bay battery as well -
When I order the W3J I will probably get the bay battery too. Much more useful than a bay drive on the road, in my opinion.
-
^ I'm thinking about it...I may wait a bit down the line as the price is creeping up quickly if I get the extended warranty...I'll also need a case, so...
-
Just wondering..why would you be getting the extended warranty?
-
Although this isnt only related to the w3j.. People were talking about how the duo core battery life is less then the centrino.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=44958
Although they wrote about a possible fix..it would really suck if we start getting less battery life. Atleast we can get the optical bay battery if battery life is shorter. -
I'm still on the fence though to be honest. Part of me does not want to go with it in case I want to mod it at all w/ a faster proc or HD down the road - in that case, I'd effectively be voiding the warranty that I paid extra to get. -
You can change the Hd and Memory without voiding the warranty. When you send it for repair you just change them back. Cant change the Processor without voiding the warranty though.
-
Just in case anyone is interested....
I checked with asusnotebooks UK and their W3J shipment has been bumped till 4th April. -
-
The hard drive and ram do not have warranty stickers on them. When you send it in for RMA though you should replace them with original stuff if you do decide to change them.
-
Roar!

The obvious difference is the build of the Thinkpad T60 versus an ASUS but I have never owned either brand so I have nothing to compare it to.
I do not know the pros/cons of the ASUS W3j LCD versus the Thinkpad T60 LCD (14.1 " w/o flexscreen and 15.0" with flexscreen) so that would be very very helpful if anyone could provide accurate information.
I will mostly be using this for work/college related.
Thank you very much for your time! -
gamers love ASUS-whatever_reliability meaning test-retest? I'd go with the ThinkPad...with the same RAM...but that's me because I've bounced several laptops off the beds at four and five star hotels...and said...woops!?
When I brought the ThinkPad back to Kaiser-Permantente's home base, they didn't ask me if I bounced this off of the bed; they just knew that I must have done something like bounced it off the bed at that hotel.
I'm thinking ASUS...but, if I could buy the same components in a ThinkPad case? No contest: I'd buy the ThinkPad...
...unless it was anything "thin and ...blah blah..."
For me? It was/is the incomparable Z33...
Maybe next year they'll drop these guys a few hundred dollars so I can buy a new one...30 percent down from this day.
Otherwise, it's the best smallest Core duo... -
I wasn't aware that there were 14 inch IPS screens -
Whitney - I apologize but I am having a difficult time in understanding your post, no offence. I really appreciate the reply but I can't really understand what side you are on, ASUS, Thinkpad or maybe neither
I might be wrong but I think you are saying that you would prefer the Thinkpad T60 versus an ASUS if you could get the same components.
"...unless it was anything "thin and ...blah blah..."" what do you mean by that, unless the ASUS was thin and portable etc.?
LOL im having the most difficult time understanding this "gamers love ASUS-whatever_reliability meaning test-retest? I'd go with the ThinkPad...with the same RAM...but that's me because I've bounced several laptops off the beds at four and five star hotels...and said...woops!?" -
-
IPS has been discussed in length here read up on it.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=44510 -
thanks johnny! So IPS on the Thinkpad T60 I described is a great LCD screen? It is TFT so I think that conflicts with what Justin said about glare-type working best with the IPS
-
I felt the exact same way... couldn't understand his post either -
i think he's saying,
gamers love asus cause they have performed in games benchmarking (test retest) and stuff, like the 3dmark05 etc. that's true when you look at the w3j's main advantage over the t60 is in it having a dedicated gpu (x1600)
i think he's also saying that the thinkpad is definitely more durable after 'bouncing' some of the thinkpads he had time and again, and that thinkpad has a good tech support.
and that w3 is just thinner and sleeker, etc. (thin bla bla bla)
hm. i think he's leaning over towards the t60.correct me if im wrong.
fyi, the v6va in the US has a 14" IPS screen. and i think Justin was saying that theirs is IPS on a glare type display, which is not common. thinkpads have them in matte.
cheers -
-
-
Thinkpad comes in both 14.1" and 15"
Isnt an 128mb ATI x1400 a dedicated GPU? -
oh oops again.
didnt go through the specs properly
yeap. it is..
stil lose out to x1600 though,
but that matters only if you really game -
*teary eyed*
i saw it.. i saw the w3j.. (well posted pics of it)
go to thread "Photos of ... w3j ..."
and i saw the touch pad..
i wants to touches it.
touches my preciousss.. -
Well....
That think pad look quite nice, as I use AutoCAD, Photoshop, Indesign and Vis, would love to see how the high res screen looks, the more I can minimise those god dam menue's, the better.
I am prety sure the drive in the W3J is just ATA not SATA.
but they are probably the only reason I would think about the IBM (oh and of course their physical strength is impressive!) over the ASUS
However with the W3J looks better than any IBM (even with the tiatanium lid, they still look boxy and plain, and that painted green and blue IBM logo Blaughhh).
Also you can install a second HDD in the multibay, and a second batter for that matter, bonus bonus.
Does the IBM have Bluetooth 2.0? I would asume so, the ASUS does.
I suppose it depends on what you want it for, the IBM would be a cracking system, with that screen I could be tempted, but at the end if the day I prefer the Asus W3J over that, mainly because of all the reviews for Laptops I have read over the last 18 months Asus have always done well and the IBMs just didnt perform as well as the ASUS.
But with whats on spec there, would love to see a review, now that Lenorvo have purchased IBM's laptop division, they might make some more apealing notebooks, as they have the pedigree.
Well thats my 2 cents -
the thinkpad might be less likely to get stolen because it doesn't look as flashy as the W3j
college notebook theft whyyyy... gosh
im just being biased now lol -
NZwaverider,
When did Lonovo buy out IBM's laptop division? and how will this affect Thinkpad laptop performance?
Are there any articles relating this to possible newer and maybe better notebooks in the future? ...say maybe June/July/August? That would be great because then I could wait to buy one and get a better one this summer just in time for the fall semester. -
Lenovo bought IBM's notebook divison a while back, where have you been?
Lenovo released the Z60, T60, and X60 series. I think the Z61 and R61 are the only new ones planned. Also, Lenovo has a budget line of notebooks they just released. -
Hi There,
I dont recall the exact date, but I remember reading about it in review magazines from about Nov last year?
From what I have seen of their turn out, in my opinion they are getting better, starting to put higher end GPU's, going widescreen, Titanium lids (although the chassis still is very business like and basic (great theft deterant)).
Their reviews seem to be getting better, there is no doubting that IBM are rock solid, with fearures derived from a well established company (security and software extras)
Their older reviews were given a hard time for using integrated graphincs and being expensive for their spec, compared to others.
Anyway I have no idea what way Lenovo want to take IBM, whether they keep it running as a business machine, or integrate it into their notebook range, or whether they want to develop a much nicer looking range with the performance and durabilty of current IBM?
I mean Compaq used to be a good brand laptop, then after HP took it over, they are now HP's budget range! (although I have seen some cracking reviews on the business Compaq's lately).
Worth while keeping an eye on them, and see how it develops but for now, I am sticking with the ASUS!!! Performance & Beauty. -
Hey everyone, I've got a couple questions I thought someone might be able to answer on this thread. I'm sorry if someone asked these but it's getting tough to even search this thread now.
1) In the US, what will the keyboard layout of the W3J look like? (if someone has a pic it'd be nice)
2) Will the powercord have 2 or 3 prongs. I've got about 50 of the 3->2 prong adapters in my house and I'm hoping I won't have to use them with this machine.
Not huge questions, just a couple things I've been wondering about. Thanks everyone!
-Rob -
It's the same as the W3v. Just check out the reviews on the W3, or even the Z63a
It's usually 3 prong, All the ASUS laptops I've seen are 3 pronged. -
-
That makes sense to me, and I know why they have the third prong. I have seen IBMs (not sure if Lenovo still does this) with only 2. I wasn't sure if someone had a W3V who might know.
-
My new thinkpad T60p's power adapter is a 2-prong.
The dell it replaced was a 3-prong
Asus W3J...
