Don't just do straight conversions... notebooks will have different costs in different countries. (usually more expensive in UK...cheaper in some Asian countires...etc.)
However, your estimate of ~2100 CAD is accurate.

Need review from the first person who gets this......

heat, weight and battery life are the main issues for me.

What do you think about the screen res? I wish it was higher than (1280 x 768) but I haven't seen the comparable screens to know how they look.

To be honest...on a 14" widescreen, WXGA is perfect. You have to see it to believe it.

yeah, for a already small 14" screen and having 1280X768 res is good...not to small so u can't freaking see. lol.

Since the guy posted that they are in and he can sell them in the UK, does that mean they are in production? Or do they have to set up a separate production for the USA?

I agree alittle high would be better. i mean a regular ratio 14.1 in screen with sxga is easy to read and thats higher than 1280 x 768. so is the screen on a z70va. So how is anything higher than 1280 x 768 to high?

Offical word is "mass production" hasn't started yet.... not the US order, but mass production on a whole. I only really care about this hemisphere and don't have access to the european time tables, but "mass production" for each model is all done at one time... at least batches are..... and the first batch doesn't even have that production date on it yet... although it should go in within the next two weeks.

Is the battery life on w3j good or bad? This system sounds good but would suck if it would go down in like two hours(maybe with gaming)..how long would it last with no gaming?

I don't think that information is available yet, you might have to wait until someone posts a review when they receive their preorder.

Is the w3j going to have the same brushed aluminum lid that the w3 has?

This Monday was originally supposed to be the first day of advanced orders for the W3j. Has that been postponed due to the unknown ETA at this point?

back on the 25th of February when the other models went up for advanced order, the W3 was supposed to have a production date by now..... and come in with the W2j... the W2j goes into production at the end of the week and yet the W3 still doesn't have a date. The W2 will probably go up this weekend, maybe... but the W3 we're waiting on a production date because we don't want what happened last year when the ETA slipped twice after advanced ordered started...... and we've got hundreds of orders to not only deal with, but people cancelling, then reordering... just screws with our order id system... so right now it's up in the air and we took off the dates that we were going to open the advanced order and it'll just be played by ear..

That seems very optomistic. Is it possible that overseas models have already gone into production but the North American version has not?

Thanks for the clarification. I thought I remembered someone saying that they didn't release the color schemes yet for it so I thought it could be different.

    Good enough.

What do you think about the screen on there? Will it be good for gaming, or would I be better of going w/ a 15" or 17" with a higher res?

I wonder why they chose to go w/ 1.66ghz vs. 1.83 or even 2.0ghz...seems close to the low end of the spectrum for the Ensemble line. Do you think the proc. will stand up to the test of time (what will...I know, but anyway)

    Is Europe getting the 1.83?

Sorry to ask so many questions - I'm suffering from paralysis from analysis here.

Probrably because of the price point, $1799 does look alot better then $1899 or $1999 if they bumped the processor to 1.8 or 2.0.

It looks like the Eurasian version is 1.86.

And numbers don't mean jack, you should know it, and everyone else should too. Have you ever been annoyed that when you say your laptop is a 1.86ghz Centrino, they go, wow thats slow. It's because numbers confuse them, and it doesn't mean anything.

I can't wait when they remove those numbers and just use the code, like the 760 Intel Pentium M, etc.

It's always been bugging me, just a personal annoyance :p

I'm pretty sure everyone knows about the comparison, how a Penitum M is about 1.7-1.9 times the clock speed of the Pentium 4.

Probably because it hasn't gone into production yet? It takes a while to make the units in large quantity, ship them by sea, have them clear customs, ship to the resellers, and then into our hands.

i c...haha its gonna be weird though at april 16 release, and after that in may Intel is dropping prices for Duo core CPU's that makes W3J even cheaper than 1799U.S heh

It actually varies, 2 times may be pushing it.

And yea, production, customs, etc. It doesn't go straight from Taiwant to resellers, it goes from Taiwan to Fremont, then out. Not sure if dealers come first, or supplier.

Although I updated the news section and made sure our ensemble page read the same..... As of today there's still no confirmed production date for the W3j. We're expecting the W2j to arriving during the first week of April and it's going into production tomorrow...... So, as long as the W3j goes into production sometime within the next two weeks.... it will be here by the week of the 16th.. which is the 3rd full week of the month... I'm trying to be a little more flexible but until they at least confirm a production date, there really is not way of being close to accurate.

I'm looking forward to it as well. I can't imagine that it would run cooler than the Sony SZ with the graphics card differences, but I could deal with a little heat for that kind of performance :)

My impression of the SZ is that it is rediculously overpriced for what you get:
    1. +Sweet internal hardware (hybrid graphics r0cks)
    2. -Lame sauce keyboard
    3. -Flimsy case
    4. -Weak sauce warranty
If you purchase it with the extended warranty and the padded case, it is almost $3000 after tax. This seems excessively overpriced for something that feels like it would disintegrate if I sneeze on it, no matter how good the internal specs might be. :p ;-)

I do have say that this is not the first time people have made comments like this. Infact it's probably at least the 15th time i've heard bad things about the Sony. Mainly build quality!

Money aside, the sz is a very good 3.7lbs notebook. It is impressive. I am on the fence as to what to get. I do not want to spend sz money.. The W3J seems like a great option. I am not happy about it only coming with the bottom end core duo processor though.
What is the configurable version of the new W3J and what are the diffences between them? (case wise). Thanks.

I don't believe W3J comes in a configurable flavor. Some places will configure it for you and that will void the 1 year global asus warranty, but they usually give you one in place of it.

"custom configure" it and you void Asus' warranty...... you want extra ram, you either buy that seperately with the notebook (and install it yourself) or buy it after the fact.......... and keep your warranty.

Some do it ageared notebooks. but you pay for the notebook price plus the aditional parts so it gets expensive. You lose your asus warranty. So is it worth it NO. do it yourself so you keep all your original parts and keep your warranty. Anyone can change a CPU Hard drive and ram. ANYONE its only a few screws its dumb to have somoene do it for you. you pay for the original parts so you should get to keep them not pay for them and just keep the replacments.

If you were to send the laptop in with the upgraded hardware they would void your warranty for modifying. However if you upgrade and something goes wrong later. Just install the old parts the pc came with and send it in to asus. They have no way of knowing you changed anything so they will cover anything.

i was lucky to get sz110 second hand for 1.5k, but I realized that if I gotten it brand new (2k) I would ended up returning it same day. Just not worth the money. When I have Fujitsu S6231 next to it to compare it's a little disappointing. Yeah, Sony has awesome features like bluetooth, biometric scan, hybrid graphics and it runs extremely cool, but when I look at the Fujitsu crystalview screen and I type on its keyboard I regret getting a Sony. So this is where Asus W3J comes to mind...

Thats fine then, it would seem that they would know that some would upgrade acouple minor items and just let the resellers do it but I am all for saving the money by doing it myself.
