    Hi folks

I am thinking about getting the ASUS W3v laptop. But I have a question on the shortcut buttons that are on this laptop. Can these buttons (the ones on the left) be used to operate DVD software such as WinDVD or Microsoft Media Player.

    Thanks
    Sukhjit

I believe they can be, editing the ATK0100 and then adding it to the registry and reloading it will remap those buttons.

But for the Forward/Stop/Play/Back buttons those are hardcoded into the BIOs I think.

If you press the "Play" button...it will start up Asus DVD; if you have Windows Media Player running, then it will control that.

I think the shortcut buttons already do what you want them to do...

we should do a sticky about how to use/control/customize those short cut buttons. i'm assuming its the same method for all the asus laptops that have these short cut buttons.

That is not possible, The CD Player can only play whats inside the Optical Drive, as it doesn't boot the hard drive(I would assume).

Actually, I've been wondering, when you use the CD Player, what actually turns on?

someone wrote a hack for Asus' HControl.exe (controls the shortcut buttons among other things): http://power4gear.bk-kicks.com/. It allows you to reconfigure the shortcut buttons to control other media players (like winamp, itunes, etc) and to make the buttons open different programs as well. I'm sure the link's been posted before, but since people are asking, it can't hurt to repost.

And about playing music while the computer's off, you can only play what's in the optical drive. It doesn't actually access the hard drive (like the hp dv1000 does). I'm also curious as to what actually turns on when you use the cd player.. maybe just the optical drive to DAC to amp to speakers or headphone jack. I wonder what happens if you have a secondary hard drive in the slot and you try and turn it on..
