I apologize if this has been asked before.

Will there be a barebones for the Asus W3V? It has been posted that the Asus ensemble models cannot be altered in any way, even adding RAM, or it voids the Asus warranty. However, resellers like AGearNotebooks, are offering customizable versions of the Asus W3V, albeit without the Asus Global Warranty and their own warranty. I think the Asus W3V fits the bill for what I am looking for in a laptop and it looks great, but 512MB of RAM is just not enough.

I was about to buy the customizable version from AGearNotebooks, but I have no idea how reputable they are and they are not listed on ResellerRatings. They are, however are listed on Yahoo stores, and have rave reviews, but I'm not sure whether most of them are legit or not. Has anyone ever dealt with this company? If so, how was the service, support, etc.?

Well, thanks for any input you guys may have.

    Lets put it this way.

If you configure the system you void Asus' global warranty which you pay for regardless. These are all coming in the same and some companies are customizing them and selling the parts that were in them in someone else's system..... they are not coming in are a barebone.

If you buy a preconfigured system from a company who is not customizing them, Asus will give you an extra year warranty (3 total)..

I can't encourage ram selection one way or another... but if you void your global warranty for someone else to put ram in the system for you, you're not thinking right.... but at the same time, I can't really be the one to explain it to you.

Can someone else chime in and and explain to him how Asus' new warranty works for me?

    Thanks,
    Justin

When you buy a complete ASUS system, you're paying for:
    ASUS Global Warranty
    All of the parts

When you CONFIGURE a complete ASUS system, you're paying for:
    ASUS Global Warranty
All of the parts in the original configuration(usually)
    Customized parts

So therefore...if you configure an ensemble model, you're losing the Global warranty but yet you still pay for it. So you're losing more money in a sense...

By the way, adding RAM to your laptop should not be difficult nor time consuming.

Step #1: Buy a W3V from a reputable dealer (like proportable) and get the 3 year warranty by buying it AS IS. If any barebones version comes it will not have dedicated graphics (no X600, intel integrated instead), no bluetooth, no color chine screen and it will probably be a different color.

Step #2: Order the correct RAM from another store (maybe NewEgg, ZipZoomFly, anywhere...). Put the RAM in the laptop yourself. If you ever have to have it worked on, take out the added RAM before having it looked at for warranty.

ASUS wants to establish their brand here in the USA, so they need to establish these new models. If companies are all customizing and reselling their models with slightly different names, it will be very difficult to establish the model and the brand.

Asus offers two warranty programs in the US. The Asus Branded laptops, like the W3, come with the Asus Global warranty that is administered and paid for by Asus in Taiwan. This warranty is good anywhere in the world at any Asus service center. Asus US also offers a standard Asus warranty in the US that has been used for all their Built on Asus models for the last 3 years. This warranty is available only in the US and is administered through Asus US and their dealers like Agear, Star Tech and others listed on the Asus web site. An Asus Branded laptop that has been modified, while loosing its 2 year Global Warranty, still has the Asus standard warranty offered through its dealers. In my mind the only think you have lost is the ability to have the unit fixed anywhere in the world. If you are a world traveller that may be important. If not, you will have a warranty through Agear or who ever you buy from. On the Asus Web site there are 6 resellers that are listed. Some of them configure the ASUS branded laptops and offer the standard warranty. I think you should talked to them and make up your own mind.

Bill, why are you again consealing yourself like you're not part of Startech? I'm just curious because one of the reasons I was asked to start posting over here was because a guy by the name of Greg who works/worked for you was posting anonymously in here and making references to startech without being upfront with everyone. If you're going to continue to post in here, I suggest you do the same.

    Thanks,
    Justin

Agian.. it's not to get off topic and I personally don't care either way....... but I don't want you to do it for the sake of the forum members. So lets just let the thread get back on track.

It's bothersome because I was invited to the forum to flush out the system builders who were just hiding around in here.

I know you signed a couple of your posts before, so some people know who you are.... but if you want to suggest to forum members what to do and where to go..... I don't care if you send them to some guy down the street..... if you're not going to be forth coming about your identity, you're not being 100% truthful with the community here.

    Thanks,
    Justin

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing to him...but I guess I would have been a little more sarcastic, which probably would have had a negative impact on this thread...Sorry, continue with the W3V Questions...
