Windows 7 actually runs decently on older hardware like yours, better than Vista, which is a resource hog. If you can find a Windows 7 disc you could try it out. The first 30 days is a free trial.

As for upgrading your machine, you can't just replace the CPU. The Pentium M uses a different socket. You would have to find another dual core Asus motherboard that would fit your machine. I'm not really much of an Asus guru. I can't really help much on that one, but I'd say it's a risky proposition, just because the chances you will find one are small, and potentially expensive as laptop motherboards are expensive, even aftermarket ones. You'd be better off selling your machine and getting a new one for what you'll pay for a new board. Plus you got to factor in the cost of a new CPU and other parts. Good luck and welcome to NBR.

If you want to see a HUGE performance benefit, get a SSD. Something fast, like an intel drive. Don't waste your money on a cheap one, if you've got to go budget, get the intel x25-v.

You'll see a huge difference after the upgrade. Also, max out your ram. I've got a pentium M running windows 7, and its quite nice.

Another tip? Disable the minimize/maximize animation in windows. It will make the computer seem a LOT faster. On a recent system, it's not a big deal, but on something that's a little slower, every second it minimizes/maximizes a window makes it seem slower.
