    I know the W3v has the x600 and the z71v has the geforce go but i've heard things like you can look at it just that way b/c the w3v uses embedded memory to push teh video card more. So just how much better is the geforce in these 2 notebooks? If i want to be able to play CS source w/o a problem which notebook should i choose? I just dont understand why pple would buy the W3v for more money and at the same time get a smaller graphics card and less ram compared to the z71v. thanks for input

    The x600 in the w3v is equilavent to thw 6400 Go.

    Thus, x700 = 6600 Go.

    The 'embedded memory' only pushes the video card further in RAM hungry programs and has no effect on games if I recall correctly.

    Well the size + screen + its an ENSEMBLE unit makes up for the cost I guess.

    W3V = x600 /w 64mb dedicated
    Z71v = go6600 /w 128mb dedicated

    The x700/6600go performs between 30% - 120% faster than the x600.

    If you want a small computer with a small 14" screen, then go with teh w3v. If you want a less portable 15.4" high res screen with the graphics performance to back it up, then go with the z71v. I chose the latter.

    As flaxx said, you can't really compare two different types of laptops.

    right... plus, the W3V screen is a higher quality screen than the v71. the 71 is definitely a bargain tho.

    thanks guys, that's what i wanted to know.
    Now how easy would it be to swap out the x600 in the w3v to
    a x700 or any future upgraded video card??? can it be done?
    Just wondering how upgradeable the w3v is to try and keep it from going out
    of date. thanks all for the input.

    The w3v gets a tad warm when running with the x600. I really don't want to know what the x700 will do to it.

    The w3v will never be upgradable GPU-wise(Without heavy modifying) I would say

    i disagree with this statement. I personally don't like glare-type screens and i love the 1680x1050 wide screen, which is far better to me than a WXGA screen.

    The next generation W3V will no doubt have at least an 8-pipe card (such as the Geforce Go 6600/ Radeon X700/ Radeon 9800), but manufactured on a smaller fab process (smaller = less heat, higher clockspeed/ more transistors, cheaper to produce). I think they are currently making the X600/X700 series on 130nm process. If they retool the X700 for the 110 or 90nm fab process, it will run a lot cooler, with lower voltage and can be used in smaller form factors like the W3V. Its only a matter of time.

    But yeah, the two machines (Z71v and W3V) are very different. The W3V is a lot more portable, but comes with a trade off in terms of screen real estate and graphical hardware performance compared to the Z71v.

    upgrading the W3V's video card will all depend on how easy it is to access it and if there's a w3v refresh coming out any time soon with updated graphics. ;)

    heat may or may not be a problem depending on which video card you choose. I'm still waiting to hear back from justin about ordering a small cover so I can try out a little 'cooling mod' i have in mind ;)
