Mid march is the best guess right now......

You're right... basically an M5, with a wider and shorter screen.

The new chipset, camera, dvd burner are all going to jack the price up I'm sure...... There is a reason the S5/M5 aren't going anywhere.

I think Justin at Proportable has all the details on it and will be better help...there was a thread that touched on it (something with "new asus laptops 2005", roughly).

It's basically the M5n with a smaller screen (to make room for the webcam) and uses the updated Centrino chipset (which may not be a great thing--> slightly worse battery life, but slightly improved performance). I believe it's coming out in the next few months.

Looks interesting, but I don't know if I would sacrifice a screen for a webcam--seems an odd trade off, but if you use that kind of thing for conferencing then by all means...

No.. not the same screen. I had a demo and I wish I had taken pictures of it against the M5......

You can figure out the difference in the screen very easily.... But I made up a simple scaled graphic so you could see the difference:

    http://www.proportable.com/images/screensizeratio.jpg

You can see how you gain some width, but lose more height. Technically you have less screen space with a widescreen... but thats how things are moving. Hope you all enjoy the diagram I made.

I never noticed the fan issue on the M5 and thats saying a lot because my ears are really sensitive. I've had and used both for over a year now.... and I've got different configurations of both.

As far as the W5, it's much like the M5 although maybe slightly better performance in benchmarks... realistically.. I don't know who's really going to use that extra performance in that size system. I can't comment on spec or battery or screen as I am pretty sure all of that has changed since the last demo I had.

    oic....
well this is the situation....i am goin off to university this commin september...and i am searchin around for a laptop...i was pretty sure that i am gonna get the M5N..but then i saw the fan issue bein addressed...so i was concered wit it...since it will be on quite often...so i am worried about the cooling of the laptop...as far as noise of the fan..i dun really care that much ~

if i get a M5N...i will hav to get it wit the extended batt...cuz standard one will not satisfy my needs for sure....

my other option is gettin a S6231B....

so..i dunno ! sigh ~ so much to look into wit buyin laptops !

the fan really isn't that big of an "issue"...well, maybe for some more than others.

as I mentioned earlier, the M5n is a very cool (temperature wise) laptop..mostly because of the fan being on, but this is not a bad feature. I can't stand when laptops get very warm.

But this is one of the first laptops that (gasp) I can actually use on...my lap*. But I'm very happy with it and I have had no problem with Asus support either (just because they won't "fix" the fan which they purposefully set and don't consider a "problem" does not result in "bad support"--had they advertised the M5n as the "quietest 12' laptop ever!" I would have been pissed, but that was never promised and it's not that loud in most environments, IMHO; but you have two choices: 12" laptops are either quiet and hot or "loud" and cool, just the limits of technology.)

*No, I do not plan on fathering childern anytime soon, so I don't mind the sterile issue. [ :D]
