Possibly not so. The RAM in that particular model, I believe, is soldered onto the motherboard. That means it just not possible to remove the older RAM.

the w7j has one occupied slot in addition to the soldered 512mb. you can just switch out the module that is in the occupied slot.

i had the 1gb module before i upgraded to the 2gb module. honestly, there's no difference whatsoever in xp. vista on the other hand, seems to run a bit smoother.

You should try to match the frequency of the RAM that you're replacing. Higher freqs will downclock, but you're paying for speed that you can't use.

I think the W7J used 667, but not sure. Check with CPU-z if you don't know what is there already.

On the other hand, this is a confirmation that 2GB sticks actually do work in the W7J.

It is possible to see the benefit in XP, as well, but only if using very memory-intensive apps (high-resolution graphic work, for instance).

The W7J used 533, the W7S used 667. The speed of the built in RAM on the W7J was limited to 533MHz, I forget why now, so even though the motherboard supports 667MHz RAM, memory will only operate at 533MHz. Or at least, thats what I remember Justin from ProPortable saying back in 2006.

And one of the forum members did put in a 2GB stick of RAM to confirm that the W7J did actually support 2.5GB of memory, so you should be fine. This is the thread, a simple Google search found it: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=130608

As posted above...yes, you can use a 2gb stick. 533 and 667 will both work fine.
