Hi all,
I have an Asus W7S laptop with an Nvidia 8400M G video card. I've read recently about how all of Nvidia's G84/G86 chips were messed up so I decided to check out how the temperature of my chip was.
One thing I should mention is that this laptop gets really really hot and the fan is always on, so that was another basis for me to check the temperature.
In RivaTuner I checked the graphs for my card and it says that my core temperature is 80 degrees!! Isn't that a bit too high for when I am just browsing the internet?
The palm area is burning hot right now and I know from past reviews and stuff that this laptop is famous for heating up in that region.

You can use Power Saver plan in Vista or Battery Saving in Power4Gear eXtreme when doing less demanding tasks. Also check the threads below to cooling down your notebook,

ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
If I recall correctly, Riva has a known history of reporting core temps that are a bit offset from actual.
The W7 is a small formfactor chassis and if you aren't using it on a clear, hard surface then you will further restrict airflow and increase temps more. The heat in the palmrest area is directly above the HDD, which is separated from the plastic by ~1/16" air distance so it will warm substantially when the HDD is under heavier use. -
How hot is hot? Mine usually runs in the 72-78C region, though its gotten quite a bit hotter recently, maybe because the weather is a lot hotter now than it was before.

Hey Redline,
Does your fan also constantly stay on all the time...its really annoying and loud! -
I do remember the similar situation had taken place times ago in 'Three men in boat' written by Jerome K Jerome
-
Which power plan are you using?
-
I'm using high performance, but even in battery saving mode, the temperature stays at around 77-80 degrees.
-
Go to Power4Gear extreme, Battery Saving - Plugged In, Adjust your Power4Gear Processor Control, Maximum & Minimum processor state. I set mine to Maximum performance, 80% & 5%. My GPU temp. is around 65-70c(from RivaTuner).
-
My temperature is still the same value. Does you fan always stay on and get really loud?
-
I can hardly hear any noise when I'm on Battery saving plan. Have you tried updating your driver? Still using the default video card driver?
-
I have upgraded from the download site for another ASUS laptop. I'm using Driver Version 7.15.11.7482.
Here it's summer time so my laptop's fans are on always. Even during the winter time the fan will be on most of the time.
Which program can I use to check my CPU temperature? Could you also check yours so I can compare? My laptop might be overheating for some reason :S -
Well, I live in a tropical country which is always HOT
I use Rivatuner Core 2 Duo Temperature Monitor Plugin to check my CPU Temp., follow the guide here. My CPU Temp. stays around 60c(Battery Saving Plan). You might check the links in my second post to have better chances of cooling down your notebook. -
Wow and even then u say that your fan is barely audible? Mine is very audible and is very loud, i can hear it from the other room as well! Do you think its because my video card is over heating for some reason? My CPU temps are about 65-70 degrees as well, so even those are a bit too high compared to yours. This is using your battery saving settings as well :S.
I'm tempted to open up my laptop and see how much dust is in there, but I'm worried that it will void my warranty
Another thing to note is that, when I literally not touch my laptop, the fan will slow down but will still be audible. As soon as I start scrolling or opening sites/folders, the fan will instantly spike up and get much louder. -
I was actually referring to the OP's statement that his W7 was running hot. It was a slightly fancier way of asking what temps he was getting.
77-80 C is about what I'm getting these days, fan running almost constantly, yea. However, I put it on a cooling pad, which drops temps by at least a couple of degrees and has a louder and more annoying fan. Hopefully, Nvidia gets that revised driver out to decrease temps on the G84/G86 cores. -
Yes, it will void the warranty
But you can try the suggestion below.. and invest on a cooling pad
Btw, are you using Vista SP1?
-
Sorry, my bad
-
Hey,
Yes I am using Vista SP1, but i'm not sure how that can affect the temperatures
hmm thats a good suggestion for cleaning the fan, however If i aim the vacuum nozzle on the fan, is there a chance of the blades getting bent?
During the winter time once my fan would constantly stay on its highest setting and the computer would get extremely hot. I took the vacuum nozzle and sucked up as much dust I could from the side vent without opening the laptop. Immediately after, my fan speed slowed down and I think the temperatures might have dropped as well. The fact that redline and I are both getting much higher temperature readings than you tells me that it could even be a bad air circulation problem possibly due to dust, but then again it could even be a faulty video card like how the rumour states
Also i'm not too interested in a cooling pad, I don't want another loud fan on top of the one I already have haha -
I just read that, REALLY a very bad news
I wonder how Nvidia and Asus will handle it..
