The estimated batter life of under 3 hours is kind of sucky compared to apple's macbook. I noticed the maH for a 6 cell battery is pretty low as well. You should be able to get 4400mah with 3 batteries in series and 2 sets in parallel.
What gives? Any actual battery tests out there?
Maybe it is that windows USB bug drawing all the power?
-
there is a 9 cell option, which should provide somwhere in the vicinity of 4hrs of battery life, which isn't too bad, imo.
-
The W7j has a dedicated graphics card (Go7400), whereas the MacBook has integrated graphics. That certainly has something to do with the lower battery life.
By the way, does anyone know how far the 9 cell will extend out from the back of the W7J? I've preorded a W7 and would like to get a fitted case for it, but I'm not sure of the dimension with the 9 cell inserted. -
Proportable.com has a picture of both the 6 cell and the 9 cell, though not in the laptop. However, the 9 cell doesn't look tooooo much bigger than the 6, i'd guess 3/4"?
-
A dedicated graphics card is no excuse for a laptop to have under 3 hrs of battery life. The Sony SZ, when using its Go 7400 card, will last at least 3 hrs.

Each version of the battery gets 3/4" wider...... the 3 cells (which aren't even offered in the US anymore on any of the notebooks) sat flush with the unit and was about 3/4" wide. The 6 cell is 1 1/2" wide and sticks out of the notebook 3/4". The 9 cell is then 2 1/4" wide and sticks out of the notebook 1 1/2"......
3 hours on the six cell battery for this W7 is actually very impressive, no matter how it's slanted....... it's comsuming a lot of power, but it's also going to get 25-30 minutes per cell, which is exactly on par with our bigger notebooks which have 8 cell batteries....... 30 minutes per cell is certainly good for a system with dedicated graphics, although some people will get 20 minutes and even some with 40 minutes, depending on their use..... -
I'm late to this conversation and I've seen the estimates referenced elsewhere on here -- but, where did those estimates come from?
-
PROPortable Company Representative
The estimates come from tests of the demo models........ but mainly chipset/cpu/gpu power consumption verses a known battery....... The W7j can be easily compared to the V6j power wise........ and thw 7j is using the same battery out of the W5f....... Compare how a W5f compares with a V6j and you've got pretty good numbers..... but then again, the also follow a pattern similiar to all of the other notebooks... so that's almost a way to check your work, also....
-
I just baffles me to see why the mah is so low on the six cell pack.
Now a days, LG has 2400mah batteries and with them in parallel, you should be able to get 4800.
Now for the 9 cell version, the total is 66maH. 6600 / 3 = 2200 mah per cell which falls within standard of modern cells. Around 2200mah to 2400 mah.
For the 6 cell version, 3600 / 2 = 1800mah per cell. Why on earth did they use such a low capacity cell. If they increased it to 2200mah x 2, you'd get 4400mah. That is a 22% improvement over the 3600mah cell. Anyways.... -

They're good batteries and there are only a handful of battery makers that are used in notebook specific projects..... Asus has teaming their systems and apple, sony, sharp, amoung others with new batteries from the same battery company for years..... with close to no problems at all and none if we forget the big, but limited bad z71v batch that they got last year...... this is honestly a question to pose to Asus and more specificly, Taiwan..... good luck with that, but that's really where you need to go.
Asus is worried about battery verses cost and design issues......if you think you can help, you should give them your advice. -
GoldServe, you've just posted what's been bugging me for years about Asus.
I don't know if it's a marketing thing to make their notebook's batteries sound larger (and longer lasting) than what they really are, but they push the terminology '6-cell, 8-cell, 9-cell' as if they are huge capacity batteries, when they really only have the mah capacity of batteries with less physical cells.
I don't think anyone is questioning if Asus are using good batteries, the question is why is the mah rating of their '6-cell' significantly less than the industry standard now (with the same amount 'cells') with the same physical size. I mean, Asus batteries are not smaller than Sony's (as an example), so why are the same size cells filled with less juice?
These days, technology has advanced to a (standard size) 6-cell battery = 5200mah or more (like what Sony, Apple and Dell offer in a battery that size), where Asus offers the same physical size battery with 4400 or 4800mah? Surely this is to save money or keep the weight down. The same holds true for their '9-cell' battery (3-cell batteries are a waste for me, so I won't even compare those).
Regardless of what is behind the Asus battery mystery, they (Asus) seem to like to use the amount of 'cells' in their marketing terms (as well as various re-sellers) when really, you are not getting the power/juice found in the same 'cell' amount/type battery from another leading brand. I find that somewhat misleading.
I am no expert on batteries, but there is definitely something bizarre going on there.
Back to the 'battery sticking out'. On the W5F, the 6-cell battery sticks out much more than the 6-cell on the W7J. On the W7J the 6-cell battery is sticking out just a little bit - almost flush with the system so the 9-cell on the W7J should look more like what the W5F looks like with the 6-cell attached (with a bit more sticking out, but not as bad). -

I can't remember If I asked this already...but I know I didn't get an answer so...What are the chances the 9 Cell W5a/f battery will fit/be compatible with the W7J?
-
well proportable has it listed under it's accessories Optional 6600mAh (9 Cell) Battery for Black W5f / W7j
scroll to the bottom. -
So, when the Asus website says the W7j dimensions are 12.4" x 8.9" x 1.45", is that including the 6 cell battery sticking 3/4" out the back? Or is that the dimensions of the notebook with the 3 cell battery (which sits flush with that back)?
Sorry to keep harping on this, but I'm trying to figure out the correct dimensions for a fitted notebook sleeve. Thanks! -
someone said earlier that LG have 2400mAh batteriee, where you talking about AA's cos they are only 1.2v I'm pretty sure that a notebook doesnt make use of multiple 1.2V batteires.
1.2 x 3
1.2 x 6
1.2 x 8
1.2 x 9 would all give defferent voltages then.
So its more lightally that their cells are 3.6volts each. So 4x 3.6v = 14.4 volts and 2(4) parallel x 3.6 would also give 14.4 volts like in the Asus batteries I've seen.
I have seen some 8 cell batteries with a rating of 5200mAh and some only with 4400mAh (like mine) which i dont understand.
Unless some Asus notebooks use cells of AA size and others or something closer to C size.
I'd be interested to know what the defferent mAh ratings you can get for a 3.6v Li-ion battery in AA size, like what the MAX is.
insane -
NO, I am talking about LG 18650 3.6V li-ion batteries. They come in 2400mah.

I don't think the 3-cell battery will sit flush. It looks like it would be too short, and you'd have somewhat of a hole in the back.
-
the 6 cell sticks out about 2mm (hardly noticable).
-
it shows the battery sticking out the back a little. I'm guessing this is the stock battery -
^^^ Yes, that is the stock 6-cell battery. As I stated earlier in the thread, since the 6-cell is practically flush with the machine, the 9-cell shouldn't look too bad.
-
I wonder how it looks? like... is that black aluminum polish? carbon fiber? is it like the Mac's Plastic-ish glossy look?
i cant tell anything from that screen shotexcept that its black, lol.
And if this 6cell battery gives it 3.5Hrs or life, im sold! -
im getting 3 hours max on the 6cell
-
linsook....what kind of setting do u have on when u get 3 hours....what type of usage...wifi bluetooth on?
-
its on quiet office mode in power gear. wifi bluetooh on, i updated windows (50+ items).... uninstalled norton security. fiddled with settings, downloaded some programs, surfed around and chatted. level 4 on brightness

Has anyone tried the microsoft patch that dixes a bug with usb2 devices and core duo chips? From tests, people can reclaim 15mins to 30 mins of power! I think you'll need to go to a knowledge base article and it's not part of the regular windows update.
This affects the Asus machines because most of them have built in usb cameras.... -

http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/06/09/evaluation_microsoft_power_drain_patch/ an article on its effectivness. -
A few minutes is better than nothing. You've got nothing to loose. You may end up seeing a dramatic difference =D
-
you i just installed it.
-
Time for you to do another battery test....=p
-
lol, ill get back to you in a week than.

Is there any way to underclock the GPU? I'm thinking that if the 3d power isn't really needed, the GPU can be underclocked substantially, with no performance hit in general use, but with higher demand, just crank the thing up. Is it possible? Thanks.
-
If you install nvidia drivers, there should be a GPU clock adjustment inside the nvidia control panel. You may have to search online and enable coolbits registry key or something like that.
-
Do you think it would help with battery life? half hour better if you underclock it to a snails' pace?
-
I have no clue as to how much it will help but I think 10-15 minutes is not unobtainnable.
