I know this is a hard game, especially since in raw power, the Macbook Pro Dies in front of the Asus, but by how much? The size difference is huge! I mean, I don't mind size but 11.8 lbs? Here's a rendering of the size in perspective between the 15" 17" and 18.4"
    http://imgur.com/19J30.png
So I'm just curious, since I do a lot of CAD work, and gaming, I wanted power. This was it. Now what am I missing in the Asus? It doesn't have:
    -Led Backlit display
    -Multitouch trackpad
    -backlit keyboard
    -high res 1900x1200
-Size and weight (.98" and 6.6lbs vs 2.5" and 11.8lbs)

So guys if you could help me out figure out which is better, and which to go with. And again, I don't mind the size so much. Just the other things. The power consumption on that must be a LOT.

The mac does not like CAD very much.

The Sager NP9262, Sager NP5792, Asus W90, or Lenovo W700ds would be my choices.

    the faq would be useful.

If you're going to work with CAD, I'd suggest going choosing a notebook with either a Quadro or FireGL GPU since those would be more optimized for CAD applications.

So to answer your question, I wouldn't recommend either.

Somewhere like 8x is my conservative answer.

Well this isn't going to be my workstation, it's primarily a gaming laptop. I already have a desktop with a FireGL card, and I have a Viao TT for portability. I just need something that can handle CAD.
But even as far as gaming, I just want to know what i'm missing out with the W90VP-A1, since I can't even find a release date on it.

The Asus would chew up the MBP 17. If you haven't seen the review on this site, here it is. But like some have already said, if you're doing a significant amount of CAD work, FireGL or Quadro cards are the way to go.

Thanks for the quick replies guys. Also why the hell isn't the A1 listed anywhere? And why isn't it on the main page for Asus? Anyone know a release date? I'm seeing 4/22...

they seem to be in two totally different and almost opposite ends

the w90-a1 is a beast the macbook pro is cute to look at

Nope. The vaio TT is perfect. Probably one of the best buys i've ever had. I've tried other netbooks, but the keyboard and the screen and also the processor handle everything so well, running windows 7 is perfectly fluid. It's Awesome.

    Also Quick Question:
can you upgrade the W90V at all? As in the GPU, or the CPU?

Im not sure if you do the GPU you may want to ask in the owners lounge but yes the CPU can be upgraded if you want to in the future.

Thats great to hear about the TT i was considering one from the Sony outlet but i think im gonna wait for the price to drop just a little but more. Did you get the Dual SSD's?

    Don't see why not.
A couple of the builders offer them with a whole slew of different processors (QX9300 upgrades are going to be very popular) and Asus has announced a milder NVIDIA GPU version to be released in the near future, so it is definately an option.

3 DIMM slots means you could theoretically bump the RAM to 12gb too.
2 HDDs means all kinds of options: 7200 drives in RAID0, 2 SSDs, an SSD and a 5400 drive for backup, etc.

So when's the release date on the A1? And seeing as the chipset is X38, I'm guessing this bad boy supports DDR3?
And no, i'm using a 750 Gig Notebook HD. SSD's are a bit pricey

The first shipment arrived at the system builders today (I just received confirmation from XOTICPC that mine has gone into production).

That I'm not sure about. Right now everyone is equipping them with sticks of DDR2.

I agree, that's why I opted for dual 7200rpm drives.
I can see myself going to SSD once the price comes down a bit on the larger ones though...

    They're currently maxed out at 500GB. I don't think a 750GB 2.5" HDD is available yet.

Yeah i know. I spent the last 15min lookign for a 750gb drive and then realized they didnt exist. lol. But about the MBP vs the w90, i actually owned a MBP 17" for the past few years and i just purchased a w90. Trust me, the w90 KILLS the mbp. I love the apple but the w90 is truly a bad*** laptop.

Yes, in terms of raw power, the W90 is superior in all aspects. :)

The only advantage i can see Apple having in this area is weight which would be WAY lighter.

Apple MBP handles most things fine, apart from hardcore gaming. 4870 x2 is slightly overkill for most games...
