First, let me say that the person who was going to give me the OK to guarentee my statements was sick today, so that might need to wait till tomorrow.

However, the update to the warranty is as such.

    - Asus is setting up an authorized ensemble dealer list. These dealers are trusted not to customize the units at all. If you buy from these dealers, you will get an automatic 1 year extension on the 2 year global warranty.... so yes, 3 years.

    - Any dealer selling the packaged ensemble units and also those units, but customized, will not be on this authorized list and even if you buy an packaged ensemble, you will only get a 2 year warranty.

    - Any dealer, period, caught offering customization to these units, will be only be able to do so to the stock they have, becasue Asus will not continue to sell to a dealer offering this, no matter how they name them or who warranties them.

    - If a company is on the authorizes list and then decides later to start customizing them, they could be voiding that 3rd year warranty on on past customers systems.

This warranty doesn't go into effect until next week when the W3's come out. And I understand they are fine tuning this, but Asus will not continue to sell to any company who is going to customize the units.

So this means I should wait until next week to place an order for a V6 ?

    So...

This means we're just going to get the stock units and we do the customizing ourselves in a nutshell [if we choose to do so]? Like for the W3V, I'll have to install the extra 512 MB RAM myself right [and possibly void my warranty if ASUS finds out]?

Well Asus has to find out, and they do stop by the forums so people who can't just get the drift need to smarten up.

I don't have any more details and until my rep is back in the office tomorrow I can't comment further. I believe that this will be retro active to atleast the first of April, I don't know if March will be included, but I think it should.

At the same time, until it's "official" and finally posted online somewhere, we can only go on what the word from the top is for the day. As of Friday, there wasn't going to be a "special" for buying from an authorized or preferred dealer..... but now apparently there is going to be a "where to buy" section, and then a "preferred or authorized" section.

I spit it out as it's confirmed to me, but then people see this and go back to asus and tell them they aren't going to do this and try to pressure them into something else. So, mark my words, as of 8:30 EST, this is the deal. Will it change tomorrow or the next day?... I couldn't tell you. All I know is that it continues to evolve, but it won't go backwards. Asus is trying to figure out the best solution to some of the problems and (in my opinion) are trying their hardest to make it best for them, their dealers, and the end-user.. So relax, take it easy, and find your own loop holes if you want, but we can't encourage anything. Do things at your own risk, but consider the risk and what you're really risking. We're not talking about a bomb that if you cut the red wire instead of the blue one, is going to blow up.... Everyone seems to be taking it that way.

    Thanks,
    Justin

Nada...... yet anyway. They better have it nailed down before the W3's ship though. I'll see if it changes again tomorrow, but we'll see.

So basically places like Startech aren't going to be able to offer any of the Ensemble systems with modifications like they currently are period...even If everyone understands that they're only covered under a STARTECH 2 year Warranty and have nothing to do with ASUS anymore by choosing that option? And If they continue to offer Ensemble customization, ASUS is going to cut them off all together?

That's pretty brutal, I wonder how they're going to take that news!!!

another reseller, agearnotebooks, is offering two flavors of the w3v like startech. One for $1,999 with no modification and 2 year asus global warranty, and the second one that can be customized starting at $2,099 with the reseller's 2 year warranty.

    http://store.agearnotebooks.com/asusw3vprice.html

I guess asus should be aware of this by now, and let us see what asus has to say. The warranty question continues!

I would imagine there will be a bit of a kerfaffle among resellers who have been customizing the Ensemble series and maybe ASUS will back off a little bit. Or maybe not. If they do anything, they really should relax a bit on the RAM upgrade thing. Everything else they can be as strict as they want about, but they're going to have ease off the RAM thing or they are going to lose business and the resellers will not like that.

At least, that's what the oracle tells me.

This is a bit weird. Why does Asus than write in specifications of their laptops: expandable to 1 GB, or 2 GB..., one slot free (or something similar) if there is no possible way to expand it without voiding the warenty?

By a barebone if this is just continues to boogle your mind...... Yeah, I know, you're not going to get the EXACT same system in a barebone, but it's sort of the point and one way to keep stuff seperate........ anyway....... Try to read through ANY major companies warranty policy and I bet you find stuff that you didn't know was there (fine print) and Asus' policy isn't that bad and the warranty itself is probably one of the best.

I understand all of your points.. I do.. I'm *****ing on the memory because for the last year I think we're the only company who actually told customers how it was and that memory was the only thing we could upgrade as long as they kept the original incase of warranty issues.... Now, since like almost no one else paid attention to that, they are going more hard line and making something everything can understand in plain english.... Good or bad... it'll be understandable and fair.

    Thanks,
    Justin

If and when it does, it'll certainly post..... but our warranty already reflects it.

Just getting caught up on this particular thread, but a few days ago Proportable said the warranty rules will probably be retroactive to the first of the month? That doesn't seem right. Does thier EULA say that they can change the rules at any time?

This 3 year warranty asus spoke to me about is something I have a feeling will be a monthly promo.... so I don't think it's going to be available on every notebook.... Like instead of offering a $150 rebate or an extra battery... I think they are going the route of an extra year warranty..... I'm not sure, if you read above... I argued with myself over what the possible options were and offering a special extra year on everything for every dealer... didn't make a whole lot of sense. So, ignore that for the time being, because I just have a feeling it will be a promo thing to push sales or certain models, rather than an all out 3 year warranty on everything we offer...... Asus has been hush hush about this, since Monday........ so, we're still waiting to see.

    Thanks,
    Justin

I was doing some shopping for Notebook RAM and I happened to go to Corsair's site.

    www.corsair.com/corsair/system_select.html

Toward the bottom on the left they pose a pertinent question to this thread.

Is the ASUS Global warranty a written warranty? Because if it is then ASUS has to prove that the components you changed caused damage to the warrantied product in order to void it.

Wower, I think you make a good point.

I know when you modify an automobile, you void manufacturer's warranty only if the modification causes problems in that area.

For example, if you replace your car's exhaust system, and then your brakes fail, they still have to fix the brakes.

On the other hand if you put in a turbocharger and your engine blows up. They probably will not fix it.
