I'm considering buying an Asus Z70VA notebook in the US (wanted Z71V but I'm concerned about the infamous battery charging problem) while on travel there and bringing it back to Canada. I was shocked to discover that Asus does not have a service center in Canada despite having them in much smaller countries ( http://support.asus.com/service/service.aspx?no=113&SLanguage=en-us).

    1) Does this mean I would have to RMA my notebook to California if something goes wrong?

    2) Also, do I have to pay duty or tax when I bring the notebook back accross the border? Would the border personnel ask me to prove where I bought the notebook every time I cross the border?

    Thanks,

    Vlad

Built-on-Asus laptops have warranty service through the dealer you purchase from. You don't deal directly with Asus for either the Z70va or Z71v so if you buy from a US retailer, you'd have to ship back to them if something goes wrong.

Ensemble models get service from Asus, according to this there is a new service depot in Markham, Ontario.

If you declare it, you will have to pay tax. It also depends on how many nights you have spent in the US. I'd check out Canada's governement site and do a search for that question. It is actually illegal to bring in something more than 1 grand into Canada, if you stayed for less than 2 nights or something. You can try not declaring it and hope you don't get searched :)

Also, you can always buy from CanadaSys, they have great prices and do an in-store warranty so all the border smuggling issues can be put to rest.
