So I'm working on a laptop for a friend. She bought this laptop for her daughter who dropped it and damaged the hard drive.
I'm ordering a new drive and wondered would I be able to use the Arcornis software from WD to make an image of the old drive even if it's failing?

Not if it's damaged mechanically. If it's physically damaged, then you would probably need to have the data extracted off it from a lab. Physical damage = not much you can do. :(
