I'm only posting this to make a record for other x501a owners or any other similar designed laptop that has charging issues. I searched but can't find anyone who has had this issue so i'm creating a thread to help the community.

    Here's my story:

I brought my X501a with me to my in-laws yesterday and apparently it turned on during transport. After lunch I opened up the bag and it was pretty warm. Core temp said it was about 165F when I pulled it out of the bag and opened it up, though it was probably a lot warmer since temps will drop quickly on this machine.

Anyway when I opened it up the laptop thought it was plugged in, though the charger wasn't connected (it was still in my bag). Power 4 Gear is constantly switching from AC mode to Battery mode to High Performance and Battery Saving, it's getting really annoying. I'm guessing since the laptop thinks it's plugged in that it's probably the charging circuit.

The laptop functions as normal other than charging and going to sleep, I can still manually put it to sleep. To charge the battery I have to remove and insert the battery while it's on and plugged in. Also if I have the laptop turned off and reseat the battery the power indicator will glow constant green until it boots into windows. Once in windows for a couple mins the light will change from solid green to flashing green and orange.

Here's a screenshot when on battery

I opened up the laptop today and took pictures and found that Asus was smart enough to make the dc jack/charging circuit a separate board. Without hesitation I ordered the part and it will be here in a couple days, it only cost me about $35 shipped.

Here's a pic of the board

I've never experienced this issue on a personal laptop, though I have repaired a couple Dell laptops that wouldn't charge that had separate charging boards. Hopefully this will fix the issue, i'll update this thread after I replace the charging circuit.

    Just a quick update...

The dc jack/usb board didn't solve anything, I ordered a used 100% tested motherboard on ebay and it wouldn't even recognize my batttery, nor switch from ac to battery (unplug would turn off, then without plugging in the laptop you can power it back on). I returned the motherboard, was issued a refund and bought another board from another seller. The second board tricks you into thinking everything is great and everything works without a hitch. Then around 29 mins without warning it randomly powers off. I tested this board many different ways and between 29-30 mins the board powers off.

So now i'm waiting for my 3rd motherboard hoping it's the final one (while writing this i'm using the board that thinks it's always plugged in). I'll update this when i get everything up and running, or if i have to go though several used boards before I find a good one.
