I've recently purchased an Asus X50RL Series laptop, which came with Vista, but since its all slow and unresponsive. I want to change to XP.

I have a few questions, if someone could please answer them that would be very helpful.

    1. I want to backup Vista before reformatting, should I somehow backup the entire HD or should i just use the ASUS RECOVERY DVD that came with the laptop? Am i right in thinking the RECOVERY DVD is like a format to what i had when i first purchased the laptop?

    2. Once XP has finished installing, I'll have to install the drivers for everything right? VGA, audio, touchpad, wireless, bluetooth, webcam etc?
Can someone direct me to where i can get these drivers?

The asus support website doesnt even list the X50RL series...

    Thanks alot! :

I have never seen the X50 listed either but I am sure it is along the same line as the x51 or x55. Anyways, could the sluggish performance be in part due to Bloatware? Alot of people remove that stuff the first day out of the box. It is rather a simple proccess that usues the recovery disc included with the system, and then interupting the install when it asks for the driver disc. Instead of putting that in, just restart, and then manually intstall the drivers form the driver disc, and all of the bloatware will be left off of the install. As far as drivers for XP, if the vista drivers do not work, and the site doesn't list the model you have, you may need to figure out what manufacurer mad each component in the laptop and then use the drivers they provide. In any case if you run into trouble, you can always pop in the restore disc, and start over form the point you got it.

    Thanks for the reply!
I guess the sluggish performance could be because of bloatware, but in still, i rather just go back to XP, instead of Vista.

The recovery disk i got with the laptop can be used to format the laptop back to when i first got it (with vista and drivers all installed) am i correct?

Yes these are, but for wireless there is no xp driver there. Make sure you select XP in the 'Operating System' in the upper right corner of the page.

It doesn't show up what? The wireless driver? It's because there isn't any for XP. Or it doesn't show any drivers for you? For me it does..

It doesn't show you wireless driver with XP selected because ASUS has no XP driver for wireless, just Vista.
But it does shows you the drivers for the other components right?

Your wireless adapter is Atheros right? If you know the model you could eventually download the driver from here

The wireless card isn't going to work without a driver. The Atheros.cz site does have download links. The check marks are links. If you click on one it takes you to the download page for that driver. You'd want to match the card type you have with the version of XP you have and click the corresponding check mark, if there is one.

Ok I'm pretty sure you have Atheros AR5007 so you could try the 'AR5007EG' or the 'AR5007G' driver..

You have Realtek right? Did you update your XP? For realtek you have to install the driver provided(in your case ASUS) AND you have to install Microsoft hotfix KB888111 High Definition Audio Driver Package.
You should also try the latest Realtek Driver R1.94
