So apparently theres only one model dvd burner from asus if you get the z70/71?

I'm wondering about media. I don't know too much about DVD media but I've read that it seems to be unreliable and inconsistent depending on brands.

Specifically with this burner, is there a brand that works best? Also with this burner, is it better to have + or - media, or does it matter?

Which burner is it? Generally, Taiyo Yuden discs are the best. FujiFilm blank DVDs sold at BestBuy and elsewhere marked Made in Japan are TYs. You can also buy them at places like Rima.com. They also make some of the best CDRs as well. Mitsubishi Chemical, Sony, Ricoh Japan, and TDKs are also good. On a side note, what it says on the outside of the box does indicate who made the discs and whether they are any good. A lot of people buy Memorex or HP’s discs because they have heard of the brand. Most of these media are made by other companies with the brand name slapped on it. The quality varies greatly from one batch to the next. You can use DVD Identifier to find out who makes the discs and look them up on Videohelp.com using the manufacturer id to see what experiences others have had with them. You can also look up your burner to find some good media for it. Sometime certain burners do not like certain discs. It may possible to order without the burner and install one yourself. Find out what burner it is and post back. If it is an NEC burner, I would keep it. Good Luck.

Couldn't agree more. Taiyo Yuden is one of the best medias out there, though they can be more pricey (I last got a 100 pack for 45 bucks when it was on offer). Verbatism medias are not too bad either. I would avoid those compusa medias (sometimes if the price is too cheap when its not on offer, that raises an alarm). I am one who kinda believes that you get for what you pay.

My PS2 loves the cheap CompUSA discs. They are usually Princos which is not top manufacturer. I've used high quality discs and sometimes they don't work, but if I burn it on a Princo it always works. Funny.

Yeah. Thats great for you. They are so many factors in determining the quality of a media. Sometimes it might be the burner problem or the way the user is maintaining the disc (having it lay around, exposed to direct sunlight or fingerprints, storage habits).

Actually, the Z70/71 comes with various DVD burners. Some peeps on this forum has NEC, Toshiba, Matsumi, and I've got a Samsung. As for media, there are many medias that work very well. I've never had a problem with the Samsungs and NEC drives- I've burned various types of media, from name brand to the super generic. It all works, but for DVD players out there- some are picky, some are older format, some will play everything. I've got a DVD player that'll play divx, windows media files, mp3, and everything else. As for my un-modded Xbox, the Verbatim's work well, haven't tried anything else. But what I'm trying to say is that you dont have to be too worried about media nowadays. :D

    Hey Mike.. to clarify.....

Toshiba/Samsung is one company... those are the same drives......

    Matsumi is Panasonic............

The only people who have an NEC drive, didn't get it with the unit and would have had to jerry-rig a faceplate onto the drive - or not use one at all...... not really a good option.

might be going away from this topic a bit, but how are the slot drives, compared to the regular ones (in terms of performance, etc)? I really like the slot drive that came with the acer ferrari and i am wondering why they are not being widely used (other than the cost for sure).
