I have a Z70V for 4 days, but I am experiencing a problem with a video card. I turn it on and use it for about 30 minutes, and then the laptop is suddenly restarted and gives me a blue screen. After Windows XP is recovered, I receive this error message: "The display driver for ATI MOBILITY RADEON X600 seems to be responsible for the system instability." It keeps restarting for every time I am using it.
I tried to install the latest video driver from Asus website, but I still encounter this problem. I have tried many things. Reinstalling Windows XP SP1 and SP2 does not help me at all.
I purchased this barebone from GenTechPC.com. I added a hard drive, memory, and install a operating system. It has Pentium M 760 2GHz, 1GB RAM, 60GB HDD, Windows XP. Ram is Transcend brand.
I tried to call Asus tech support, but they have no idea what could be wrong. They assumed that the video card might be defective. They suggested me if I could ask for an exchange other chasis with GenTechPC.
Before I am going to call for the exchange, I would like to know if anyone has such a problem. Do you think that the video card is really defective? Or Maybe, is the RAM not compatible with the video card? This is my first time to have Transcend RAM. Please help me. I truly appreciate your help.

Any other software that you installed?? Since the video card is basically used all the time... what do you mean when you say that it shuts down whenever you're using it? As in, when you start up a game or something like that?
Thanks,
Justin

Thanks so much for your reply. I am sorry that I did not describe the problem clearly. Whenever I turn the notebook on and use it for about 30 minutes, the notebook shuts down (restarts). Before it restarts, the screen is dim and pink gradualy, and the notebook is hung up. I don't play games. I just browse the internet and listen to music with Windows Media Player. Sometimes, just browsing the internet gives me such a problem. I just install Windows XP and drivers for video card, modem, soundcard, memory reader, etc. as provided with Asus Driver & Utility CD. As I noticed, without installing ATI driver, the notebook is working fine, but the screen resolution is not right due to Windows XP driver (generic driver).
It's very strange to me because I have never seen this problem. I am really tired by reformating a hard drive and reinstalling the operating system. I did about 10 times, but I still cannot solve the problem. I called Asus tech support, but I have no luck. I followed what he wanted me to upgrade, but the problem still exists. He recommended me to exchange the chasis.
I was wondering if Z70V motherboard is not compatible with 1GB for one slot since a dual channel. If the video card is defective, why it is working with Windows XP driver? Can the video card be overheated? I forgot to mention that I don't overlock or do anything to the video card.
I installed the operating system smoothly, but I cannot make the system work as I want.
Honestly, I understand when you call for an exchange, GenTechPC or other PC builders won't be happy. Since there is no refund for the notebook, the only choice is the exchange. However, I know when I call, it's not really easy to get a RMA. And if I will get the replacement, will it cause the same problem?
I thought I got my dream notebook. Unfortunately, I got a nightmare. Due to weekend and holiday, I have to wait for tomorrow. Every minute I wish I don't wait. I am searching and searching for a solution. I found this forum, and I hope there is someone who can help me because I see many notebook experts here.
Again, thank you very much for your inputs. -
I had a bad hard drive that would cause reboots like the ones you are describing except it didn't give anything informative as to why. I'm not a computer technician, but I would say that first of all since it mentions the video card as the problem that is the most likely cause. Beyond that I would be worried about the memory and the hard drive. I'm sorry to hear you're having these problems, because I've had bad luck with computers in the past. So if you can, get someone else to deal with it. You've got a return policy and a manufacturers defect policy - employ them. Let someone else get the headaches that's why we're paying so much for these systems.

Do you have other software that you installed on the system?
It's weird that it's working fine without the drivers, but with them you're getting the error. I don't think it's a problem with the video card itself... it may honestly just be the driver as the error is telling you. Usually that happens when there is an incompatibily with some other software you are using..... Have you tried to check for all windows updates first?
The ram should be fine.
Let me think about this one for you and get back to you.
Thanks,
Justin

I really appreciate your suggestions.
Here is my system specification.
Z70V
- Pentium M 760
- 1GB DDR2 533GHz (Transcend)
- 60GB 7200rpm (Hitachi)
- Intel 2915 802.11 ABG
- Windows XP SP 2 (latest updated)
Besides Windows XP SP2 (including latest upgrades) and drivers for notebook hardware, I installed BitDefender Pro Antivirus software. With the old and latest BIOS, I still get the same problem. I tried to remove BitDefender, there is still no help.
I am thinking of returning the RAM, and get the other brands like Kingston.
If the video card is working properly, this notebook is a nice one for a widescreen 15.4 WSXGA.
Justin, have you built one Z70V for your customer? Any feedbacks yet?

By the way, I just wanted to mention that I have a retail XP Pro version. -
Is the window u installed a legal version? Here's the problem with IRQL not less or Equal. It's usually happens when your hardware doesn't match what u had when you installed the windows. IE. Install windows with harddrive in one machine, then transfer it to another. Another may be cause by memory defect. If you have two sticks, try removing one at a time. See if any of that work. I do not believe that your graphic card has anything to do with it because if it is, it shouldn't have to wait 30 minutes. I would check the memory first.
I had this problem on my desktop last year and got it fixed by swapping the ram. I never had any with notebook though.
Good luck. E-mail me if you need more help. -
Given that this issue doesnt seem to occur on all z70v, as your the first to report it, I'm betting that its a hardware issue. The cause??? those windows error reports are about as helpfull as tissues in the rain. Im pretty sure I saw a beta driver on the ASUS support page for the M6Ne, this could be worth a shot, otherwise some users have had good success with omega or DNa drivers. I tried these and they worked fine till I upgraded, then everything went pear shaped. Thus I would suggest taking the lappy back asap, get a new one, in the end it will be much less stuffing around.
Good luck

Did you check to see if ASUS has an updated video driver on their website? Maybe that might work better... it's worth a shot.

Agreed... the drivers off the CD are usually fail-safe. If they don't work properly, nothing will.

Yes, my Windows XP is a legal version. I have only one stick of RAM, and it's working for my friend's IBM T43. I did upgrade latest drivers from Asus website even BIOS. I have done many things that I could think of. I re-install Windows XP (clean installation) many times. Well, I search on Google, and I saw many people having the same problem with ATI video card with their desktops.
My assumption is either CPU or the video card is overheated. I just want to see if someone who owns Z70V would give me their feedbacks about this system. I am not a lucky person. I will call GenTechPC today if they can give me a replacement. I hope they will. -
This is one of the examples. I was wondering that ATI x600 PCI express card is not stable.

These were all issues desktop based cards, the mobile version is a bit different so this may not apply...also you probably wont be able to easily upgrade to the newest ati drivers which fix may the desktop issue without hacking em first. Second, the mobile X600, is being used alot by asus in a number of n/b, so since your the first to see this issue, I would say that it has to be hardware.
I had similar problems with my M6Ne, got the m/b replaced..ie gpu 9700, and issues were resolved. Thus I suggest you take it back asap, I spent weeks trying to figure out and slove the problems...including numerous re-installs. Nothing helped and I wasted a small portion of my life...would hate to see you suffer the same fate...esp since in my case the m/b was replace in one day and I was without my notebook for 2 days in total.

Yes, I shipped it back yesterday. Hopefully, I will get the new exchange, rather a repaired one. I have to wait until they receive and inspect it. Then, they will ship the exchange. Well, I probably have to wait for a week or more.
Thanks so much for all your suggestions. -
Hope the new one works out for ya, let us know how it all goes.

Hi All,
I just wanted to let you know that I received the new one. It's working well now. Gentech (getechpc.com) is a great reseller as well. They sent me the replacement righ away without testing the returned chasis. After they tested the returned barebone, they informed me of its status. The problem was RAM. Transcend memory is NOT compatible with Asus Z70V. -
Congrats man. I'm glad you got it worked out, and thanks for letting us know about that ram issue.
-
Glad to hear that you had a good return on the warranty! Trying to decide which reseller is the best...
