Ok have the dual layer dvd burner in my asus z70va. No i just burnt my first dvd with it and noticed it goes at a rate of 2.4X while burning DVD's. Im using the nero that came with the laptop. Now i cant change this anyhigher, as under nero specifications it shows my burner maximum speed as 2.4X. I thought that this burner was 4x, was i mistaken??

What drive did you get? Also, it could be the media. Have you tried others? I've got some TDK's and it worked well.

Also, there's an upgrade on the Nero Software on their site. Or you can just load up the Nero SmartStart and upgrade from there.

Well the drive i purchased was listed as the ASUS DVD+-RW MODULR DRIVE Z70V FOR Z70V SERIES SD12 in device manager its listed as MAT****A UJ-831D . Figured it was the only drive you could get for the asus Z70VA as its listed specifically for it. Anyways your thoughts on this please.

DVD burners are very fussy about the media and, if they are uncertain, burn at a slower speed. You can find media that are more compatible with your burner by either trial-and-error or by posting the burner model number and seeing what other people recommend.

You can also check whether a firmware update exists for the burner. This contains a look-up table that has the media reference codes and the appropriate burning speed. However, firmware updates for notebook burners are quite rare.

Sorry, haven't used those drives, I know there was a giant thread on that floating around about people hating that particular drive, but I'm sure there's an update or patch on that somewhere by this time.

That drive is very picky with the media and many people have issues with the burning at the drives stated speed. I contacted ASUS concerning this issue and at first they told me to send in my notebook for a firmware upgrade. A day later they emailed and stated that "no firmware upgrade was available". ASUS support did send me a list of some of the media that has been tested with this drive. Here is a paste of the email:

Sorry for the delay, but we were checking into this more and found there is not really a newer firmware update for this optical drive model.

If you are interested, below are some approved media IDs, but you will not normally be able to check this before you buy the media, so be careful of this

You can check the media ID from the Windows Programs menu for the Nero software and Nero Info Tool Disc information
