Anyone checked their DVD Drive. I am curious. The one I got was a Toshiba TS-L532A. According to spec it is an 8X. But in Windows and Nero, it says it is a 4x.

    Any idea why?

    + / - R -- it is 8

    DL -- it is 4

    + / - RW -- I think it's 4 or 2... not sure.

Look the drive up on toshibia's site.... it's one of their standard drives.

    Thanks,
    Justin

i don't know --- I think so.. because if you're using a DL... it's only going to tell you how fast it can burn that format..... not based on the media.....

If you have a 4x dvd.... and a 16x cd burner ---- and a 8 x dvd burner (or whatever) ..... it's going to tell you that you can burn a dvd at 8x........

I don't think my explaination helped...... but the drives are working like they should.. there is just like what.... 8 different formats you can burn on that drive and they are all different speeds.

    Thanks,
    Justin

Some 4x DVD will burn at 8x on some burners, and Nero will allow that.

    Example:

    NEC-3500A, burns my 4x Taiyo Yuden's flawlessly at 8x
NEC-6500A, burns my 4x Taiyo Yuden's at their rated speed of 4x

Basically, if even one factor is bad, you'll get lower write speeds. Laptop drives, unfortunately, don't have as much room for error as their desktop counterparts, and as such you usually can't cheat as much. Sometimes, depending on the media characteristics, 8x discs will be recognized as lower speed rated media, even on 8x capable drives.

It sucks, but that's just the way it is.
