Asus Z71V Hard-Drive

is the 60 gig Hitachi 7200rpm 8mb cache better or 80 gig Toshiba 5400rpm 16mb cache? and is it worth the money? the hitachi is only $6 more. wont the 16mb cache be good compared to the 7200rpm? im confused.

I don't disagree about sata... much..... 7200rpm sata will be great, but 5400... some things are just as good, some aren't.... but what I don't like is the brand that's out now, but to each his own and this discussion has already happened, lol... so no need to bother with it again.

Thats right 7200 rpm is better, 16mb plays a very minor role. Sata by comparison is even better. Its alot cheaper then 7200 and its faster in short bursts of reads and writes. 7200 has a fractionally better sustained speed. I would recomend sata. SOme may disagree

Seagate and Hitachi....... should have the seagates in early July..... 80gb/100gb 7200rpm sata.... and they are also coming in pata for the systems that don't take sata.... but you can still get the larger sizes in that speed... They are expensive though.

so an "80 gig Figitsu 5400rpm SATA-SERIAL-ATA 8MB Cache is going to perform better than the 7200? how? i need all the performance i can need couse i wil be using this for dj use.

the new 60/80/100gb 7200 sata will be quite expensive... Hitachi is even coming out with a 120gb 7200rpm sata and that is going to be very expensive.....

take a look right now at what a 60gb/5400 pata drive costs...... compare that to a 60gb/5400rpm sata drive..... and then those to a 60gb/7200rpm pata..... you're jacking up the price with the higher rpm's and much more with the serial interface.

Right now I'm going to guess..

60gb/5400rpm pATA is about $100

60gb/5400rpm sATA is about $120

60gb/7200rpm pATA is about $200 because of shortage

That's a 20% increase for the serial drive and a 100% increase for the 7200rpm... Although the shortage will go away, the new drives will be in shortage also, but also have that brand new elite type pricing anyway, so you can bet that a 60gb/7200rpm sATA drive would be... lets say 20% more than the pATA, so $240.


If you take that sort of logic and apply it to a 100gb drive... even though even the 100/5400 sata drive isn't out yet, nor is the 7200rpm.

100gb/5400rpm pATA is about $135

100gb/5400rpm sATA is about $162

100gb/7200rpm pATA is about $270

If that sort of made up logic works out... a 100gb / 7200rpm / sATA notebook drive will be about $324 when it's released in at the begining of July....

Now, before I get posts saying this is all screwed up and so forth.... without even trying to come up with a logical price months ago, I said a 100gb/7200rpm/sATA notebook drive could probably command around $300. It will be the largest capacity, fastest speed and fastest bandwidth when it comes out... it's not like getting a 60gb/7200rpm now where it's not the biggest and it's not the newest format...... So when you have everything, I think even though expensive, I might not be that far off.

If I am, I'll be glad to be wrong though.... so no need to rub it in my face. [ ]

You can google some unbiased tests and get physical number for yourself to do a comparison.....

Right now the 60gb/7200rpm drives are basically extinict from North America.... they're going to be coming back and will be bringing some new friends with them as well...... but right now their price is very high.

Serial ATA is new and fujitsu is the only one with them right now which drives the price up just like hitachi did with the 7200rpm drives for what will be coming up on 2 years.....

Serial ATA at 5400 is certainly much improved over a 5400rpm pATA drive..... but it is about 20% more expensive for just greater bandwidth. A lot of tests show the drive being a hair behind a 7200rpm drive, others show it ahead and others show it further behind. Again, do a google and decide for yourself... I've had experience with serial drives for years now in my desktops and a 5400rpm serial drive doesn't come close to the performance I need for heavy graphics rendering that a 7200rpm drive with pATA can do... I don't have a heavy enough testing under my belt with these fujitsu drives yet because they're fairly new and my faith in fujitsu's drives hasn't been that great over the years both in performance and quality of the drive as far as life span is concerned.

I don't want to open up a can of worms or anything, but my answer would be... I can't wait for 7200rpm serial ata drives... but the argument won't be there any more..... I prefer seagate and hitachi and with the new 7200rpm drives coming out in pata and sata... we're going to be sticking with mostly seagate..... The only hitachi drive I think I'm going to want to carry is the 120gb/7200rpm/sata.... and that's going to be a while before it comes out.... Hitachi makes great drives, but seagate has a 5 year warranty as opposed to hitachi's 3.... hitachi has the speed and performance right now, but seagate's 7200rpm drives are about a month away. As long as their performance is at least that of what hitachi currently has.... we'll be using them for almost everything.

I've said this before.... even if seagate or hitachi made a 60gb/ 5400rpm sATA drive, I would still get hitachi's 60gb/ 7200rpm drive..... all I can add to that is I have never liked the quality of fujitsu drives.... they could be making a 200gb/7200rpm serial drive right now and I'd have a hard time convincing myself to let us sell it. But those are my own feelings and things that don't work out for us in the past aren't going to be something we want to offer down the road... Offering something we don't believe in doesn't seem right.

The below results were copied from my review which is a couple months old now. THe info is self explanatory. Go with 7200 if you are doing sustained reds and writes. There are many apps which are read/write intensive. My advice is Sata but you will not be wrong with either one. Both are performance based drives. 7200 being rare and expensive puts sata into the #1 spot

Random Seek= 5.03ms / 5.38ms
Linear Seek= 1.82ms / 1.22ms
Full Stroke= 6.15ms / 3.64ms
Trhoughput= 39000kb/s / 35000kb/s

60gb 7200rpm / 80gb Sata 5400rpm
Random Seek= 5.15ms / 4.87ms
Linear Seek= 1.75ms / 1.03ms
Full Stroke= 2.84ms / 5.44ms
Trhoughput= 39000kb/s / 35000kb/s

Right..... Graphics programs.... where you're constantly rendering or pulling information off .... basically heavy reads and writes... a 7200rpm is going to be ideal, still.

It depends on the use of your computer.... if you're getting a heavy graphics system to actually use in that matter...... 7200rpm is still your best choice....

But again, availability, brands, models, size, cost.... all play a part.
