I'm just curious about a few things.

It allows SATA drives through its PATA controller, so is there any advantage to using a SATA drive?

I read this laptop was dual-channel, and yet there is only a single memory slot. Am I missing something?

sata drives for laptops are overrated you will get some increase though.and the z71v has two memory slots. not sure if they are both under it one might be under the keyboard.

I'll be gaming with this at LANs (UT2004 and maybe some BF2).

With the heat generated from gaming, will a 7200rpm hd be too much? I accidentally ordered a 4200RPM drive with it, and I'm looking to order a faster one around march. Should I just get a 5400rpm?

The z71v is a decent sized machine cooling is good in it also. A 7200 rpm drive will not be a prob whatsoever its worth the performance but buy a good one like a seagate. People are putting 7200 rpm drives in asus v6va with no issues and that chasis is an inch thin.
