Shouldnt one of these Asus do just as good a a Sager with the same config? Also will this Asus Z81-SP have the option for a 7800 video card?

The ASUS has a MXM 6800 Go, so I'm thinking its possible, but I don't know til we see the 7800 be placed inside the z81sp. Theres no reason why its not possible though

I think the Sager 9880 is way to big to be considered practical - unless you want a LAN party machine.. :p

The 15.4" size of the Asus is very appealing, especially considering that it has pretty much the same amount of power as the Sager. Also, MXM is a nice feature, even though it is not that useful yet...

That was my logic but I wanted to ask. I actually don't have a problem with the size of any laptops but I am not liking 17" screens personally. I also think that you would get more bang for your buck performance wise with a smaller/less resolution screen.

The WSXGA screen is pretty large on a 15.4"

Is this laptop no good or something? I never heard of anyone owning one and I can't imagine why? It is alot cheaper than the Sager but can hold the same specs.

Its a great laptop i am just proofing my review. It has full support for the 6xx series cpu. Asus specs are wrong. The 6800 scored 3900/9100 in 3dmark05/03. The laptop is super thick, heavy and has a huge 185watt brick but its a monster when it comes to raw power. At the price it is going to be the dtr that makes noise soon. Heck of alot cheaper then anything sager (clevo) has to offer and very comparable 3dmark scores.

this is a very nice high performance laptop; it's too bad it doesn't take a P-M processor.

Because the Pentium-M has much better battery life...and is a much more efficient CPU

Yea, a P-M would of been nice!

But I still think it wouldn't reduce the thickness...

Although a AMD 64 would of been nice on the z81sp instead of a P4...

    z83sp anyone? :p

If it had a pm in it not only would it be thinner the brick would also be twice as small. Keep in mind the brick for the z81sp is 185watt and is 5 times the size and 10times the weight of a standard 65watt brick you have on your notebook. Its not just the video card that is power hungry its the p4 in it.

I was interested in the Z81SP when I went to look for my notebook, but the P4 turned me off - I don't really care about battery life, but I would like to be able to have some freedom unplugged. Also, the power brick is huge like you said!

The heat really concerned me as well - I don't want a stove, I already have one of those! It's called my Pentium 4 desktop. :p

Ah, Pentium M is the way to go for a laptop! :centrino:

yes pm is the way to go for laptops. Only reason i am even reviewing the z81sp is becuase there is a market for it and like all vendors i am bound to sell even the things that dont make sence because is i dont i loose $$$
Only thing that makes this z81sp truly unique is that it is very copmparable in video performace to the 9880 clevos with even the 6800 Ultra but it costs some 800$ cheaper and is the first 6800 to be released from asus.

You guys are making me feel bad for wanting to replace my desktop machine. I am not in need of a uber portable device so weight and battery life doesnt matter one bit. I just browse and game and need to be able to go from room to room now and then.

well in your case it's good, and for people who go to a lot of LAN parties who truely want a desktop in a laptop form factor. You'll definitly save money with the P4 (at least for a while, until the electrical bill comes in, but in the winter it will supplement your heating bill, haha) cuz the architecture is cheaper and so are the processors (i.e. more money for RAM, hard drive, etc)

You guys have shown me the light and I will not be buying a laptop! I now see why laptops just plain suck and that money is better spent on a good desktop and a mobile desk cart. Thanks

Laptops don't plain suck! We all have different computing needs.. some of us require mobility, others don't. We all can't take mobile desk carts with us across the world...

    Haha! Very true. ;)

I would be lost without my laptop - I take it back and forth to work every day, plus I love taking it into my living room and hooking it up to my TV - it's a great DVD player! It's also nice to sit outside on the patio during the summertime and surf the internet..ahh freedom!

As for staying on topic (lol), I don't think you should write off laptops - there are many laptops out there that are comparable to desktops. True, it is difficult to upgrade a laptop (except for the hard drive/RAM/wireless), but then again, it is nice to be able to transport your computer without the hassle of moving a monitor, cables, speakers, etc.

Let me rephrase it....laptops just plain suck....for me. I don't mean to offend the true moblie computer people who require them to function day to day. I was just inquiring about these devices so I too could be somewhat portable but not to the degree most of you need it. Maybe I will build a bigger house with a 4th bedroom, get neutered so that way I will once again have my own computer room. I thought the laptop idea was simplier but the latest idea is genuis!

It's true a laptop isn't for everyone, but it dang comes in handy!

For most users, a PC will do fine, but mobility is heaven to others.

I was going to get a Shuttle, a 19" LCD and a lcd projector(cheap kinds, the $1000 ones) instead of the lappy, since I had a workable Latitude, but decided against it..

Cos I needed a wall that wasn't covered in posters which I did not have lol :p

HAHAHA! That's halarious... you're one of THOSE people! I have friends like you (with their 3 layers thick of posters). I was the "clear walled with the occationaly human anatomy poster" guy (haha, you'd never guess i'm a nerd unless you 1) knew my online alias/activities and/or 2) saw my room with its 3 or 4 anatomy posters that make it look like a physician's examining room)

Sorry to break it to you but you are not the only closet nerd in here. Most of us dont exactly wear pocket protectors but most of us here are bonded with our computers. Also i probably steak my laptop on it atleast half of use here at one time or another left some kind of activity to go home and watch startrek when it was playing.
