I was given a Asus Z9200u to try and fix.
The problem is that windows xp home fails to boot and booting in safe mode and last good known configuration all results in a BSOD.

I thought i'll just reinstall but i cannot boot up from disc either, i insert windows xp cd and then go to the boot menu and select boot from DVD drive but it just takes me to the boot seletion page where i can select to boot up in safe mode etc and if i select any of those i just get a bsod.

also the bsod just flashes so i cannot see what the error is.

    can someone please help me?

It's going to be SUPER hard for anyone to help without an error code from the BSOD, can you try and see it after repeated attempts...

Also hit the escape key (or F8, either works) at the POST screen to get to the boot menu. Or you can change the boot order from within the bios setup to make the optical drive first.

nope, couldn't boot from the dvd drive.
It gives me the option of booting from the dvd drive but after i select it, it just takes me to the screen where i can shoose to boot up normally or in safe mode.

Tried changing the boot priority aswell, same thing happened.

i switched the hard drives around with another laptop and it seems like the hard drive is fine.

How about flashing a fresh copy of the bios?

If you're not comfortable with bios installations, then I'd recommend sending your notebook in for repairs. Even if you tried to reinstall the bios and the problem still exists, my next recommendation would also be to RMA it to Asus.

    Oh ok, lame.
Do you think changing the DVD drive will help?
Maybe the DVD drive is broken and won't read the data?

I wouldn't bet on it since you're already getting the bsod without using the optical drive. If you happen to have an extra optical drive for your laptop (or even an external optical drive), you could try it and see if that will work.

Just shooting in the dark without the error code and file that is causing the BSOD. Can you make out the error code after repeated attempts?

I don't think so. Best to take a picture with a camera or you could record a video...

Recording video is the best bet, difficult to get a shot with a still camera in that short brief moment.

But it seems quite weird that it doesn't want to boot & install XP. Two possible explanations come to mind:

    a) Boot device selection improper or buggy. Try completely disabling from the BIOS (or even physically removing it). Does it boot off the XP CD then? If not, then it may be an optical drive issue.
    b) The HDD is SATA, which will result in BSOD with XP installation kits. In that case, you need to slipstream SATA drivers on the CD or put the SATA interface in PATA Compatible mode from the BIOS.
