    Hi,

Did somebody updated his zenbook prime to windows 8.1 (the public final version, which is available via App Store)? If yes, do you have any problems like bluescreens or slowly reacting UI (I had them on another laptop when I updated from win 8 to 8.1). I'm not sure, if I should do the update, because my zenbook runs perfectly with win 8.

    Thanks for sharing your experience

Updated yesterday morning and all went well, laptop is working fine.
Suggest you do one last win update to 8 before starting the 8.1 download.

Thanks ProfessorShred. I think I will give it a chance. But before updating I will clone the ssd. That's the thing I did on my other laptop and which allowed me to go back to Win 8.

// edit: one more question: Can you say something about the battary life? Does Win 8.1 consume more energy?

Did you ever make any progress? I'm thinking of moving from Windows 7 to 8.1 because of the window management, power, and performance features, plus my university gives me a free copy so why not. Have you found any good reason not to make the upgrade?

I did the upgrade (but before that, taking an image using acronis true image). So far, I didn't experience any problems (concerning speed, bluescreens etc). However, I'm not sure if there's no real driver for the display? Sometime the font seems to be fuzzy. The device manager recognizes only a "standard pnp monitor". But I did't find any other (special) driver for the display. Maybe one of you could extract and provide your Win 7 / Win 8 inf-driver?

@ Grim Tuesday: I would for sure update from Windows 7. But do yourself a favour do a fresh clean install of windows instead of an upgrade (I did the upgrade win 7 to 8 on another ux31a and it wasn't that good, but a new windows 8 runs perfectly ;) )

It varies case by case, some OSes might had been worn so bad that even by doing the 8.1 upgrade it could causes other unknown issues such as slow downs, lock ups, and crashes.
It's recommended to perform a system reset first before performing the upgrade for best results.

I've upgraded yesterday my UX31A-4005H. First thing I've noticed was the blurry text on some windows menus (for example on the device manager). After a quick Google search (the first result solved the problem: [Fix] Bold, Blurry or Hard to Read Font Problem in Windows 8.1 - AskVG ) the problem was gone. This problem with the DPI scaling can affect any laptop model.

The smart gesture software has a small problem: sometimes the two finger tap does not make the pop up menu appear. This is not random. It usually works fine but if I open the device manager and try to right click a device it never works unless I fully press on the right side of the touchpad. Also if I leave the device manager and try to right click on the desktop right away (without left clicking on it first) it won't work unless I fully press the touchpad instead of just tapping with two fingers. This problem seems to affect other windows menus (like computer management or the event viewer). I´m using ATK Package 1.0.0025 and Asus Smart Gesture 1.0.29. There are newer versions of the Smart Gesture but I prefer the old one because the three finger "alt tab" is much faster and more useful.

On the bright side, the wifi connection seems to be more stable. Sometimes I would get small hiccups when viewing full hd youtube videos and now it seems just perfect.

Also windows 8.1 seems to need much less disk space than windows 8 (which is great because I have just 128GB).

I've been using windows 8.1 for a few hours and I'm quite happy.

The only problem I have (not related with windows) is with firefox (going back/forward with the three fingers works just fine on IE or Chrome but not with FF :mad2:)

I was running win 7 on my UX31A (last year's non-touchscreen model). Upgraded to 8.0 and same day upgraded to 8.1. Installation procedure asked me to uninstall something - can't recall what it was.

Everything runs fine but there are minor issues:
    - keyboard backlight turns on to full brightness, waking from sleep
    - brightness of the screen seems considerably dimmer than before
    - battery life seems better than before (could be an illusion?)

There are no official new drivers on the asus site except for an intel bluetooth one and I havent touched that yet since my headset and mouse are working fine.

    YMMV.

Windows Action Center urges that Bluetooth update. I removed old version (using Programs and Features menu) and installed the new one and all kept working just fine.

I used my ux31a now for a while running on W8.1 and everything is working fine. Ich needed to reset DPI to 100% to fix the fuzzy font problem (Thanks to Dvjustino). But I still have the feeling, when you search for an application (simply typing on the home screen) it reacts a little bit slower than on W8...

Does anyone have the "secureboot isn't configured correctly" watermark after the update to 8.1 ?

I have one UX31A-R4003X model, shipped with Windows 7 Pro.
I performed the "free" upgrade to Windows 8 Pro (without any issue), then update to 8.1 Pro...

Everything works fine (with drivers update) except for secureboot.

No option available in the bios (v 219) to enable/disable secureboot...

Even in official support page, an article speaks about this secureboot bios option (I do not have). Perhaps related to an old firmware version ?
See ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- FAQ UX31A

I have contacted Asus support: they answered me only way to get rid of this watermark is to change SSD partition table from GPT to MBR... Meaning formatting it and loosing all benefits of UEFI and GPT = I do not want to do this !

Any help would be welcomed :)

I think it's always better to do a clean install than doing the upgrade as it has always been the case with previous OS.

Ahahah, guessing they will release a patch to hide the watermark, not to solve the secureboot issue... :D

At least this is already more info than what I received from Asus Benelux support...
    Thanks !

    Hey there,

I got this laptop with Win 7 but installed Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. But the brightness and other function keys dont work that properly.
    1. brightness keys have some delays when I press them(say 5 sec)
    2. Cant turn off wifi using f2.
    3. Can use volume key though.
    4.Backlit works fine.

I have tried installing atkcpi utilities last time I tried but doesnt work efficiently.

Now I have upgraded to 8.1 and facing same issues.
    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Jerrie

    Hi Guys!

I just updated my UX31A from W8 to W8.1 and not much issues except the watermark on the desktop wallpaper previously mentioned in earlier posts.

One issue that I may have is the ASUS Liveupdate, which may or may not be related to my W8.1 upgrade. I read in the ASUS page ASUS Recommend Windows 8.1 that the Liveupdate will automatically help me to update drivers, but I have to ensure that the Liveupdate is version 3.2.6. I checked an my version is 3.1.7 - ASUS said in the page that it will self-update. But when I click check for updates, there are no apparent updates. Does anyone know what I should do for this? Do all of you have 3.2.6? Is it just me?

Another thing is that Windows Action center recommended me to update/reinstall my wireless/bluetooth high speed. Not really sure what to do with this as my wifi is working fine. I got nothing to test out the bluetooth...

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks! =D

    Greetings,

I purchased my Zenbook with Windows 7, upgraded a couple months later to windows 8. Everything worked well. I experience the lag in brightness the earlier user expressed, however, those things are no big to me. My problem is ever since upgrading to 8.1 my CPU runs hot constantly. My fan runs the whole time I'm using the computer for just web surfing. I never knew I had a fan inside, as I had never heard it on. It runs hot (not scortching) now more often and the battery life has diminished to 2 hours. I've tweaked the power settings but doesn't change the condition. I would appreciate any advice. oh I'm going to mess with the bios, haven't yet since it's only windows8.1 that changed. Thanks in advance.

I upgraded my ux31la (haswell gen) to it, and it started causing occasional blue screens on going into sleep mode, most often when the screen was closed. Reverted back to windows 8.0 and it works perfectly. Installed Start Menu Reviver and won't be looking back.

UPDATE: Windows pushed out a driver update for the Bluetooth and that worked well getting my previously not working mouse now works.

However, still have lost a lot of battery life. Removed and installed the latest battery/power Power4Gear and not much of an improvement although slightly. Just seems like the cpu is getting hit harder than before.

    Still looking for some suggestions.

    Thanks

i have today, and well first off i noticed a few stupidities...
    1. text/font on chrome bookmark bar is blurry... same thing in change resolution setting window... prolly a driver issue... (roll back will prolly fix)
    2. connecting to 802.1x wifi takes LONGER to connect than it did previously... (sometimes it even fails)
    3. winrar used to work (icons displaying properly n all) now its acting strange and freezing almost every time..
    4. swiping from left edge to right, to go to "start menu"(app changing) doesnt work the same as it did before

there are prolly more things that i could have noticed but factory restored pc shortly after...
this PC is brand new... so nothing was really installed or customized yet lol...

anyways that was my experience... kinda sucked... lol

    Sincerely,
    Sam

I have a problem with hotkeys for changing the backlit brightness - it doesn't work. Works for everything else, but not for keyboard. And I have another issue too - when I resume from sleep mode, there's no backlit, keyboard is dark. I have to reset to make it work again.
