I just got my Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A and opened it today to find that out of the 128 gb SSD, I only have 69 GBs free... I am used to not being able to access all of the hard drive that is promised but this seems like an obnoxiously small portion (almost less than half of the whole drive!)

Anyone know why this might be? Does it have to do with the fact that it is a SSD?

No sir, some of it is restricted to the recovery partition. Windows is another huge chunk taking it up. Also there are hibernation files, and page files and etc... which take up another few gigs. And the bloatware that comes with it. You should install a fresh copy of Windows 7, or wait for Windows 8 its around the corner.

=_=.... Do you know how much more room a clean install will net me? I have already started to download/ delete programs an configuring the laptop so if it will only give me a tiny bit of space then it might not be worth it....

I would do a clean install on the laptop and delete the recovery partition. If you format everything to a clean state, and just install windows + all updates you will still have ~110gigs free.

On my internal 32gb SSD on my 32VD, I installed windows, microsoft office, and a handful of my most used apps. I still have 10 gigs free.

So even worst case scenario your most used programs + windows take up 28 gigs leaving you with 100 free. Turn off hibernation and set the page file size to free up more space.

That does seem very worth it! I have never done a clean install/ deleted a recovery partition before and I tried to look online but got confused... are there any websites you can point me to?

Also would I need my own windows discs? I only have whatever came preinstalled on the computer...

I suggest following the guide located here:

Windows 7 Install Optimization Guide For Ssds Hdds By Sean Webster - Overclock.net Community

This is the guide I use to setup all my (and my families) PCs. It is the BEST resource for installing windows to your PC. Download links to the ISO for windows (from microsoft) available on there as well.
