I noticed this today in a print advertisement (Australian) - nextstep are selling something called an "Asus a6qj" - see http://www.nstep.com.au/
It's listed as having a 15.4" screen, 512m ati x1600, dual core 1.83ghz cpu. Pretty good specs, at a good price (au$2790)
I assume this is either the a6j or the a6ja : http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=1005&l1=5&l2=24&l3=0 or http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=1006&l1=5&l2=24&l3=0
(I haven't worked out what the difference is - it's too late for my brain to be working properly)
So, anyone have any experience with these? Is there a comparable overseas model so I can look at reviews etc?
(Incidentally, I think I've given up on lighter options - I want good 3d, I'm not sure I can wait for the w3j, especially given my pcmcia needs, so I think I'll have to live with the 2.72 kg claimed for this machine, or something similar)
-
Until someone gets their hands on it, no reviews til then. Unless you want to be the first
I believe that is a A6ja, it states 512 video memory, so its probrably the 256 dedicated, 256 shared x1600. -
Its an A6 model, therefore it will have the same case etc as that whole series... the other letters ie J and Q will stand for the internal config of the machine, in the case of the J= intel dual core, while the Q is something new that I havent seen. The best thing is to check the fine print of the specs and make sure thats what your after.
The A6 is a budget/desktop replacement model, thus the cheap price, but in that price range its a good buy. As for the listed weight its the bare min. Your actual travel weight will be more like 4-5kg, when you include bag/adaptor/odd etc etc. If you plan on carring this everyday then I would strongly suggest looking/waiting for something smaller...eg the w3j.

I'd definitely be interested to know where you got it, how you find it, etc - great to hear it really exists, so many laptops seem to be "we'll know what it's like when someone actually sees one"
A few things I wanted to know that aren't clear:
- it lists 512m of video ram - I assume thats 256m dedicated, 256m shared?
- what speed / type is the hard drive? All nextstep say is "100G" - the Asus page seems to say it's an IDE drive, which seems strange - all other laptops seem to be SATA.
- did you get the wxga (1280x800) or the wsxga (1680x1050)?
- how much does it really weigh?

Let me know if you have any other questions ok mate? I havent actually turned the sucker on yet, ill give it a go in an hour or so. I cant wait! -
So far so good!
I love this thing already. So far i cant find a single fault. Its lightning fast, the screen is crystal clear and the keyboard and trackpad are a pleasure to use. The intergrated webcam is great fun considering ive never really used one, and its great quality.
I was initially a little concerned about the look of it (the chassis) however my concerns quickly disappeared once i lifted the LCD and turned it on. This thing is perfect.
I am 100% happy with this, my first notebook and therefore my first ASUS.
I know you guys here arent wrong when you say they are the best! -

haf fun mate -
Hi, this is my first post to this forum!
I've been trying to work out what laptop to buy for a few months now. I've nearly decided on the Asus A6qja. I think I can get it for $2050 AUD with 1.5gigs of ram. Also, a freind has offered to salary sacrefice it for me so I'll get it for a bit over $1600! This will be my fist laptop and I want to use it for a bit of everything. Although I don't really like the look of the chassis on this model, The x1600 GPU is very appealing to me! Even though I don't play games that often, I'd like to have it for the odd occasion and I remember very well the day I got my first Voodoo 3dfx card! (running radeon 9600 at the moment on desktop).
So, I'm going to buy it this week I think. before I do though, has anyone else bought one? If so have you had any issues with it?
Any comments would be much appreciated.
How is yours going b-dos?

Hi tomi.
Sounds like youve got a good deal there mate. Would you mind posting the specs so i can take a look? Mine cost about $2600 AUD.
So far i have not had a single problem with my A6J. Its great. I would 100% recommend it to anyone.
Im interested to hear how you are going to further reduce the cost to about $1600. I understand your mate will salary sacrifice through his wage? So his employer pays for it, then he pays back his employer and you pay back him. But because its Salary Sacrificed he saves extra tax and so the tax that he would have saved he is basically just giving to you?? Sounds like a good mate. -
Lol australian people are so friendly.. You can always tell they're aussies if they use "mate" -
I'm also considering the A6JQA, since it's been discounting by several local stores in the last couple of weeks... cheapest I've seen is $2395 AUD at Computer World, according to today's search at www.staticice.com.au
At that price, it's an excellent deal... although I'm still holding out for the V6J, trying to get one wholesale at the moment. -
http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=100_56&products_id=17821
This is the one. Although their website indicates a higher price, Centrecom is selling this laptop for $2049 with 1.5 gigs of ram. I nearly bought it today but chickened out at the last minuteI wasn't sure if I should spend the money and also I was thinking that a smaller lappy would be better suited to me. hmm... We'll see.
After I posted my first post last night I realised that this review http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=49503 is for the same model. Am I correct?
Yeah b-dos your understanding of the salary sacrefice is correct. My friend is able to avoid paying tax on the amount that the laptop is worth. So I get his name on the tax receipt and he gives it to his employer and then gets extra money which he will pass on to me.! -
Again I say, a nce machine for the money. -
Well after being accidentaly given the model with an Nvidia go7300 instead of the ATI x1600 that I payed for, today I finally got my new a6qj! it's warming up my lap at the moment even though I'm typing this on my desktop.
It seems to be good so far!
tom. -
Be sure to let us know how you get on with the new toy... since they've dropped the prices on the A6J series I'm seriously considering one. I only wish they'd drop the price on the V6J a little...
Asus a6qj ?
