I was at CES 2006 last week and had a chance to see what promises to be some pretty cool technology involving a heads-up LCD display built into the notebook lid. Windows Vista will support this feature by providing information to the LCD display to give feedback on the status of the notebook and such things as new emails or IM messages received. Asus should be the first to release such a notebook and claim they'll start shipping notebooks with such a feature by mid-year, which is obviously before Vista will be out, but they'll incorporate this LCD display with the anticipation that many people will upgrade to Vista when it hits in December. Here's a couple of pics, to see more see the article I just posted here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=1220830

Maybe Im a little slow but I still cant see the huge point of this screen...when I close the lid on my lappie its usually cause Ive finished work, thus I dont want to look at it or a small screen telling me there is more to do..lol

Totally agree. It's useful for me on a flip phone because the phone is closed most of the time -- the screen conveniently lets you decide whether it's worth opening the phone when you get a call/message. My notebook, however, is usually in one of these states:
    • Open on my desk/lap, because I'm working.
    • Closed on my desk, because I'm working on my desktop (in which case I already have access to email, etc).
    • Off in my bag, because I'm not working.
I can't think of a situation in which I'd actually benefit from the external screen. I close the notebook for the very reason that I don't need to use it for anything at that moment :)

Still, it's pretty cool to see how the technology is moving, and maybe some other people will find it useful.

... ok, know those situations where you open up the screen just to check to see if you have new email or maybe to change a song or something like that?

.... that's what it's for and although right now we all think it's over the top... Bill Gates promises it'll make things easier... I'll have to agree with him.... it's one less calorie you'd burn if you were to open the lid...... but just like on your flip phone.. you can see if you have a missed call or see who's calling without opening it.

i don't really like the idea of having the little screen on top of the notebook. Yes it may be a nice function to have, but its not necessary. I have a flip phone, and the only time i look at the small screen on the cover is when i am about to flip the cellphone.
I feel that people are getting lazier and lazier everyday.

Bad idea (IMHO) given that I carry my laptop around a lot, and the outer shell does get beat up some, this extra screen is going to get broken quite quickly I would image.

i think it'd be something cool to have...although not necessary. Besides, it's not like ALL notebooks will have the external screens, just like not all cell phones are of clamshell design with outer LCD screen.

Like I said above, I never encounter those situations because that's not how I use my notebook ;) It's very possible that other people will find this incredibly useful, and I'm just in the minority. But if someone were to ask me to list some features that I would find useful in a notebook, this one wouldn't have even crossed my mind.
