So I have a Z71v and I have loved it every day ive owned it (except that damn LCD sparkle!) and was wondering what is the equivilent to that now?

I was trying to find barebones on the asus site but found it impossible...

Unfortunately there is not much variety in terms of ASUS's barebone unit since they started going 'retail' and promoting their ENSEMBLE units. The current C90 is pretty much the only readily available barebone right now.

Have you considered the S96s? It's a 15.4" notebook that supports a variety of processors and hard drives. We sell lots of them and have had excellent feedback from people who have purchased them.

The Asus Z84JP is also a barebone but is quite old now. They are still available at some Asus resellers.

According to Eddie @ BTOTech, Intel has stated that the S96 cpu support will end at Merom, no Penryn 45nm support. The S96 is not on Asus' site because it's a VBI model, supported only by Intel and/or your reseller (but manufactured by Asus).

Asus doesn't make matte-screen notebooks anymore, just glossy.

Aside form your dead z71v battery and a video card that will inevitably break unless the thermal pads are replaced with thermal pads (not arctic silver) it will probably live long as long as you keep the radiators clean

Yeah ive had two replacement battery's and I still cant get much more then an hour of battery life :(

And I made a copper shim to fit between the heatsink and the GPU... so I max load around 70°c with 300/700 clocks =D

I wouldn't mind it so much if it was a dual core and the LCD didnt have sparkle (or the dust in it or cat hair)...

That and one of the hinges broke... (It was my hutch for little over a year... I never let go of the damn thing I even slept with it... stupid school)

ye i forgot about the hinge. that is another inherent issue however the hinge stem breaks not the actual hinge which just makes a nasty click sound when you open it otherwise should not hinder "performance". i ve seen it all unfortunately, good job with the copper shim. that actually saved your vga card. should be about .5mm in thickness or less with as on both sides. works much better then the thermal pads actually.

Just a small question, what about the Z37s as a barebone, there are no reviews of it, seems not too bad, how is the build quality ? I know it's not equivalent to the Z71v as it is a 13.3", but I find no reviews whatsoever on the web.

How would you compare quality/price ratio compare to the U3S and W7 ?
