Can everyone post their average battery life for their centrino (or dothan) based configurations? My notebook's specs are listed in my signature. It's battery life is 2.5 hours when browsing, at maximum LCD brightness, and the options "max battery", cpu power save" and "LCD power save" enabled in the bios. I think that it's a little low, so please post yours for comparison.

Mine typically gives about 4 hours while doing browsing and chatting
I have an M6Ne (15.1"), 512MB PC2700 RAM, Dothan 1.5 GHz, ASUS combo drive, and a Samsung SPinpoint M 40 G hard drive with 8M cache.
more or less the same as your configuration

Hi,
I have a m3np with 1.4Ghz, 512MB, 30gb 4200rpm.
By running the battery calibration utility given in the bios...The battery lasted for a little over 4 hours. but both the power save features were turned on in the bios.
But what I think is that these settings would be overrided when running the battery calibration utility and the system would be run at the max performance.
To sum up, I believe the M3Np should give around 4 to 5 hrs battery life with all the power save features turned on.

same with me.... i've never heard my fan except for 1 second when i turn it on.
Jamakia, maybe you don't have good thermal compound or a good connection to your CPU so it's getting too hot and the fan just keeps running. What does asus probe report the CPU temp to be and what processor do you have (p-4, p4m, p-m?) -

I haven't tried gaming much on my laptop, since the fan doesn't turn on until the CPU reaches about 70 degrees... so I'm scared it might melt if it's under too much stress
haha... but I did play a lot of UT2004 when I was using my desktop.
good ol' times...
Honestly, if I could go back in time, I probably would have opted for the M3Np or the M5N... just for convenience. The M6Ne is great and all... but for school, the other two choices would have been more practical (and cheaper)

From what I hear, most ASUS notebook fans turn on around ~45 degrees... my CPU idles around 55-60 most of the time.
Anyway, it was a real toss up between the M5N and M6Ne for me... (I'm not a fan of widescreen, so I didn't consider the M6BNe). Eventually, I chose the M6Ne for it's upgradability. The M5N is really great and all, but it can only support 768 MB RAM Max... so I figure it might hold me back in the future.
I didn't really consider the M3N for the same reasons... from what I read, it only supported Banias CPUs and PC2100 RAM, but things may have changed.
This Dothan on my M6Ne is blazing fast, even though it's only 1.5 Ghz. I simply love it... and I used to be an AMD fan [}]
Hah, I paid almost twice as much as you did for my notebook... BEFORE tax, my computer was ~2000 [xx(]

When on battery my CPU is at 30 degrees and on AC it's at 50-55 degrees (although prime95 can get it to 72 peak). I wish we could set the temperature we want the fan to kick in (for example at 60 degrees). I think 45 is too low, i wouldn't want it at that low, cuz it would kick in all the time. But i wouldn't worry about this too much; our computers are rock solid stable; these are ondie temps, so as intel indicates it should run up to 100 (although i'd freak if i saw anything higher than 80).
I have the core with the 1mb l2 (i think the banias), so i couldn't comment if it could handle the Dothan, but i does detect the PC2700. I however have a PC2100 chip inside my machine, so it's defaulting to the slower. But i'm glad u mentioned it, i'll pull the stick out and see if it kicks into PC2700 with that chip in (i have a 256mb pc2100 and 512mb pc2700). You know, i wish intel would have boosted the FSB a bit, or atleast support DDR400! It's so inefficient to run asynch operation. Atleast with DDR400, the ram would run twice as fast as the FSB and therefore there wouldn't be any wait cycles on the FSB. However, i wanna get the PC2700 in my system cuz besides being faster, it'll have one clock wait a period, rather than two clock waits a period.
I'm also an avid AMD fan. The last intel i had was my Celeron 400MHz (and i've had like 5 or 6 comps since then!) but i'm VERY impressed with this 1.5! It's blazing fast!

I wish I knew for sure if the M3N could handle Dothan... if so, I might sell this M6Ne to a relative of mine who really wants a notebook.
I've also considered the S5N... but the price tag on that one is a little too hefty for me. A white/silverish notebook would be great eyecandy though.

Well, I didn't try playing any games.. but I did run SuperPi for about 10 mins.
Of course, the fan came on at 3000 RPM, but nothing higher. According to ASUSProbe, the CPU was moving back and forth between 76 and 77 degrees... I can live with that.
However, I ALWAYS run my computer with "Dynamic Speedswitch"... if I run it in full mode, the CPU goes up to ~75, then comes back down to 69... then goes back up, then back down (due to the fan)... this happens even when I'm idling!
Either the M6Ne doesn't dismiss heat well... or Dothans produce a heck of a lot of heat.
[xx(]
ASUS M6800Ne, P-M 1.5 Dothan, 512MB Ram, ASUS Combo drive, Samsung Spinpoint M 40G HDD with 8M cache, Mobility Radeon 9700 -
Is there any performance gain between running Dynamic Speed Switch and full mode? When I plug my computer in, it automatically goes into "High Performance" mode, which is full CPU speed (though speedstep is still on cuz occationally i see a reading of 600MHz) but the performance is phenominal. But as i said before, it stays in the range of 50-55 degrees. Only when i run prime95 does it break 60 (and as said before, my record high is 72 degrees). So i don't know, maybe the Dothans do run hotter. You could probably find an article on it on the web.
That's a bit anoying that it gets so high though.. but if there's no performance hit, then just run it /w dynamic speed switch. As for gaming, i guess the noise of the game would wash out the fan... as long as the fan is kicking in, that's good, so you won't burn your laptop. But i really wish there was a way to set the fan to kick in at 60.
Anyway, if you wanna meet sometime to take a look at my laptop (and i look at yours) we could totaly do that. I've got two major midterms this week though, but when are you typically available during the week?

well, I'm not too disappointed with the fan behaviour.. the added silence is quite nice... and the CPU has never gone above 77... so that's alright. If it went over 80 something, I'd start worrying.
Do you know where Yum Yum's is? I typically go there MWF, 12-1
However, I also have a break 12:30-2 on tuesdays and thursdays.

Oh btw, regarding the Dynamic switching vs Full Speed.... there's practically little or no difference. If you're doing intensive programs, or just loading things in general, it will run at full speed; if you're idling or using little CPU cycles (i.e surfing the net with mostly text based pages) then it will run at low speed... 600 MHz in my case.
I think Speedstep is the greatest thing since sliced bread... keeps my laptop running cool []

sorry guys to interfere with your chat wich seems to become private, but AuroraS, I suggest you stop worrying about your CPU temp.
from what I've read, dothan are supposed to stand 100°c before melting, and I think there is some kind of protection device which underclock the cpu beyond 95°c.
Feel free to do some gaming on your notebook, I've spent a few hours running counter-strike, and it's not that hot. the fan will be running at full speed (4000rpm if I'm correct), and the cpu temp will be under control. maybe you should unload first speedswitch or powergear, and let XP manage the whole thing.
One more thing on a more pessimistic (or realistic ?) side: if your cpu has to fry, it better has to be under the 2 years warranty.
go ahead try to burn your cpu, and see what happens !!!
if your cpu manages to last for the next 2 years, but fry after your warranty expiration date, well, too bad, but you can assume that dothan proc won't be that expensive, and you'll probably manage to upgrade.
-
I suppose you're right pixie.
I have never seen the temperature over 77 degrees, and the fan has never had to go to 4000 RPM before.
But the other thing that worries me is if I want to put another stick of RAM in my M6Ne... I've heard stories about RAM modules dying due to excess heat from the CPU.
I really hope that doesn't happen.
I have uninstalled both Power4Gear and Speedswitch and let Windows XP do its own thing... I usually have it on Max Battery or Portable/Laptop

I had a KingMax 1GB SODIMM fry after running the CPU hard for 15 hours straight. It had a lifetime warranty and was replaced for free, of course. But yes, it's possible, and it's annoying when it happens, even if the replacement is free.
The data sheet for the memory lists its max temp as 70C. While the CPU can run upward of 90C for a long time the memory can exceed its max spec, and eventually die. My lesson from this was not to run games that use 100% CPU for 15 hours straight on a hot summer day. It would probably be fine in winter, the extra heat would probably be comfortable in my lap...

Yes, but just leaving the computer on is no big deal. This was a game that literally used 100% CPU all the time; it actually had a bug in it so that it never let go of the processor even when the game itself was relatively idle.
After I replaced the memory I ran hotcpu for 8 hours on just the surviving memory module, and it was fine. I also ran hotcpu again with the new module for 6 hours. I haven't tried to reproduce the 15 hour marathon gaming session, my trigger finger can't take that much abuse again. Note that this all happened on my M6 which I just bought in July and July and August were extremely hot here, and I wasn't running any air conditioning in my work area. A lot of factors conspired to make the system overheat, and a cooler room environment would have probably prevented it.
