i sent them my overheating G1s along with a long (rant) letter.
the next day i get a voice mail telling me that they cleaned out the dust and replaced the thermal paste (what?) and that they've been stress testing it all night with the GPU hitting a max of 77 degrees
i get the notebook back and its IDLING at 76 in windows, and of course hitting 110 degrees within minutes into playing a game, with all sorts of stuttering and throttling
what on earth would you do? do these people think we're idiots or something?
-
Hmm... dunno. Probably something to do with their testing methods not being tough enough and your ambient temps.
-
its wintertime and ambient temps are really low right now.
my testing method is simply playing a game
ive been fiddling with this worthless paper weight for months now and i cant get rid of it so help me god.
at about the 5th time i send it in it will be in pieces -
Get a gaming desktop next time. At least your can put on a gigantic copper heatsink or watercool it.
-
on a side note, is there a driver that kicks the fans on earlier? im back to testing all drivers available (god i hate this stupid laptop) and i noticed that the fans dont kick in full blast till the temp is past 100 degrees
and is this throttling problem at 97 degrees fixed yet or what -
the (impotent) fan is only controlled by the CPU temperature, which is one of the main reasons the G1s gpu is overheating....
-
I am wondering if there is any workload that will burn in the GPU but will not have any load on the CPU? In that case, what you said will make more sense...
-- -
so if they ran a cpu/gpu stress test all night that would explain the 77 degrees they claimed (even tho i dont believe it for one second)
in any case, i cant play warcraft. temp is stuck at 97 degrees and constantly throttling, and when that threashold is broken it goes up to 110 degrees and cuts out really really HARD -
The C90S has the exact same probleme. Last time I sent it because it wouldn't boot, I told me to check for like, 6 major problems and they only fixed the boot probleme. Even if my GPU is running at 105C, my CPU is staying arround 65 so the fans don't even start. -
i hear they'll give you a new laptop the 3rd time you sent it in
well i'm packing it already and the new one that comes in wont even come out of the box. straight on ebay
im also done with asus notebooks. this 1850 dollar piece of crap and my 2 A8JPs were nothing but trouble.
ive only used my g1s for 3/12 months i've owned it, and i'm on my 3rd time replacing screen hinges and poorly painted plastics on the A8JPs that turn yellow/black every 6 months -
This may sound dumb but may also help... Try to overclock the CPU... That will get it warmer and should make fan come on more... Shouldnt hurt the CPU neither because it will still stay cool unless you go nuts on the overclock.
I wouldnt mess with any voltage though. Asus has the CPU's already over voltaged even if you dont OC... Look at your volts in CPU-Z and than look at intel range, Asus is always like 0.2v over.. lol
But is worth a shot, will get CPU warm which will help fan come sooner which will help GPU and hey, you will get some better preformance too. haha
I agree that you shouldn't have to do this though, but if Asus is being a pain, and trust me I understand they are, than you are low on options but to try it...
Otherwise just do something to fry the GPU and than they will replace it. If it still has the problem keep frying them.. They will get the point and do something than.
Good luck though -
-
Thats a good question, lol... If you could find a way to make it stop downclocking when it over heats and just let it stay hot it will die... I would say just stop the fan but dont want you to kill your CPU...
But try the overclocking the CPU part, maybe that will just solve your problem somewhat... If CPU gets a bit warm fan will come on faster which will keep GPU cooler. -
Sending your notebook to Asus in the first place is a mistake. When I sent mine a few months ago, they didn't reuse the packing materials I used to send it to them, and as a result the mouse button got chipped and the corner of the case is cracked. Monkeys with screwdrivers working at that place...
-
Thats not always true...
I sent my G50vt-a2 in for the keyboard lag issue as they claim should be fixed... I sent in as a DOAR RMA as was less than 30 days old... Well while waiting noticed my dads does the same thing, so it must just be a common issue...
Anyway they sent me a brand new unit back in my same box... I mean the notebook box was sealed but they reused my box and packing. Just put paper over all my RMA #'s all over it, haha.
But yea I dont trust them. Thats why I wanted a new one and not repair... The new one has the same issue... Funny thing is on the paper they sent back it lists the customer issue as my keyboard lag even after bios and drivers updated, but than the problem is listed as HDD Noise.. So they used that to replace the notebook even though the HDD were fine. lol
Oh well, at least I got a new one, so no more bad pixel on this one, just now my darn express gate dont work, haha -
call back, don't let them victimize you. -

*Edit*
Although the sleep trick works for me so I can use it. I've experienced a lot of problems with Asus products recently. They are not the brand they used to be.
Just for the G1S, I've had since August last year
-Grainy screen
-GPU Stuttering (Biggest problem)
-CPU charge bug with CPU downclocking when plugged into AC and under 80% charge (half fixed by bios update)
-Noise (The fan whine is unbearable when ambient noise is low)
-Heat (bottom and right side of kb become very hot)
-Hinge cap fell off -
-
well, i turned powermizer off. the gpu is not downclocking (monitoring it with rivatuner). just that when it reaches 97 degrees it just slows down like a car running out of gas. (pulsing slowdowns)
sometimes it will go past that threadshold and just play fine at 107ish degrees for quite a while, when eventually it will hit 110 and start cutting off really really bad. (like a drop to 1-2fps for 5 seconds)
i have no idea whats going on at 97 degrees. the fans are not helping either. the CPU doesnt get past 60 degrees so they never come on at full blast. before i sent it in they would turn on at full blast by 80-90ish degrees on the gpu. but then again, before i sent it in, even if the fans were blasting the temp would still top out at 110. -
Take screen shots of temp monitors, proof of your system ( control panel > system )along with an official time clock running in the same window. Also, whenever you game, use GPU-Z to make a log of what temps your hitting. Show them those results and have them fix it. If they don't, well, take it to the next level.

I was thinking of sending back for RMA as my warranty expires in about 6 mths. I can't confirm the GPU problem but mine is a A2 revision according to GPUZ. I bought my G1S in June 07 just a few weeks after released from Taiwan!
I always had stuttering of the games and of course it runs hot. But the games were still playable despite the slowdowns and in order to improve gaming I always try not to increase the settings to the higher levels.
Recently, on random times when gaming or watching a full screen screening video, the screen will just start to show artifacts like vertical lines running down the middle of the screen or just freeze. Then the computer will just reboot. I have tried to get the BSOD error message by disabling auto-restart in WinXP system properties, but it just reboots automatically. Moreover this are the times when the fan whines. I have checked my fans/vents to be clear. Even my laptop is elevated to allow airflow with my makeshift 12cm fan blowing from right to left to create more airflow.
I could not get any drivers or windows error reporting from the system log in event viewer, which usually logs system/software errors, hence I highly suspect this is a hardware (GPU) problem.
GPU idles at 71 while typing this. Riva tune is turned off.
I have not tried a complete reformat yet. Any1 think this is a good stand for RMA? or any suggestions are welcomed!! -
not really help but this is when those expensive "useless" best buy accidental warranties come in. Take the laptop and smash it against the floor or a wall, call it an "accident" and get a new one.
I had an "accident"with my gateway laptop, took it back in like 3 pieces and they send it in I don't know what for lol, few days later they call me to tell me to pick up a new laptop.
I had to buy the warranty again but believe, its worth it.
But yeah sucks that asus didn't fix it, I know how these kinds of problems just go unnoticed to them, next time just short out the motherboard or something and force them to replace everything inside. -
call them and send it in. -
in about 2-3 more rma's i wont care anymore and just have a go at it with my hammer before i send it in without caring one bit about the 1850 bucks spent. and trust me, it WILL be addressed to the highest person in hierarchy that i can get my hands on his address. -
I did not send it in the last times as I thought it was just part of the weakness of mobile GPUs.
The artifacts during gaming/movie that cause random reboots were recent and highly irritating! Sometimes they occur repeatly some times it was just randomly.. -
do you guys think its more of a GPU hardware thing than software like drivers, windows & programs?
Moreover the reboots occured when Rivatune was turned on!
Asus customer service treating me like im stupid. (G1s)
