i just fixed my about 2 year old asus f3sv. the reason it crashed before was overheating, so i got a program to monitor the systems heat so it wouldent overheat again(the program is called "speedfan". to my surprise however after 10 minutes of just sitting at the desktop, not running anything, the GPU had risen to a temp of 103 degrees! i opened up my laptop and cleaned the fan(witch isn't the problem, i can feel it blowing air out the vents), and the vents with compressed air but still nothing! anyone have any idea what is wrong, or how to fix it?

You may want to think about replacing the thermal pad or thermal paste on the GPU and CPU.

Your computer either has thermal paste or thermal pads that are between the CPU/GPU internal heatsink (the metal part at the top of the chip) and the notebook's heatsink for the cooling system. After a while they will degrade (the paste more quickly than pads), and will need to be replaced. If your temps at idle are close to 100 Celsius then you either have a failing/clogged fan or a problem with the thermal paste (or pads, whichever your computer uses).

Might just be a faulty GPU. I think the 8600M GS was on the list. Maybe you should try RMA even though it's probably out of warranty. Not sure what kind of settlement nvidia gave ASUS. I think that notebooks with affected cards got extended warranties with respect to their GPUs. Not sure if this was a universal application though.
My f3sv idles at around 67, but that's because its winter here. In summer it idles around 70-71, which I consider quite hot for an idle temp. Cleaning the fan and heat sink did help it a bit though. -
yeah i know 8600 M GS is faulty, and it does have an extended warenty but because i bought it on craigslist, i have no proof of purchase or anything...so i don't think that would work, ill try the thermal paste thing though, see if that makes a difference

ok, so now my gpu idles around 71-74 so im calling it a success =). now ive got a question, at what temp about is it dangerous for the comp to continually run at? like what point should i let the computer take a break and cool down( the computer was orginally bought as a gaming computer and right now while im playing a game the temp is ranging from 81-84)

I will take anything above 100C as dangerous. But your laptop will also autmaticly shutdown to prevent damage to your CPU or GPU. But 81-84C is fine under load. Quite normal. My 9800M GTX usually went up to 85C but that was a stable max temprature! I think it had something to do with Toshiba's fan system/cooling system.
