    Hey guys,

I've been rummaging around these forums for a while now and finally came to the conclusion to buy the g1s. I have installed both Vista (32 and 64 bit) and XP (32 bit). I have tweaked my settings, completely updated my drivers (using 169.04 for video), and followed countless other useful posts on this site to get my g1s to where I think it should be (4400 3dmark06).

Yet there has been one problem that has plagued me throughout all of the OS installs and shows up so far in Crysis, 3dmark06, Hellgate London, S.T.A.L.K.E.R and pretty much any other recent FPS.

Problem : While my overall framerate in these games is wonderful, I will get a constant problem where it will slow down and quickly speed up as if it is compensating for the slowdown. These all happens within the span of 2 seconds but constantly repeats. I have noticed that it won't do this right away but usually after about 5 minutes of gaming. Also if I alt-tab out and let it sit in explorer for 30 seconds it won't start doing it right away when I get back into the game.

Is the problem with the HD? (HDtune shows no problems with it?), or maybe the ram on the video card? I doubt it is the GPU overheating (90 max under load) as it is not overclocked and the laptop sits on a nice cooling pad. Anyone else get this? Any help would be much appreciated.

    P.S
I have a 7200 Seagate HD and 3 gigs of ram. I have also noticed that file transfer and unzipping takes abnormally long amounts of time but I get normal rates (avg 55mbs in hdtune) and I could just be used to my desktops raided hd's.

Make sure your notebook is properly cooled. Pausing or slow downs can be linked to an overheated CPU or GPU or even HDD.

Also, make sure you have all the latest Windows Updates. If I can remember correctly, Microsoft released another Performance and Compatibility update not too long ago.

    Hope this helps.

    Mike.

    Could be overheating.

Could be HDD swapping because of insufficient RAM, you can check that to look if the HDD light constantly blinks when the slowdown happens.

I am pretty sure people had similar issues a while ago but I don't remember how they fixed them. Maybe do a search?

Not to belittle the other responses in this thread but, the answer is completely different then overheating/defects.

The 169.01 - .04 drivers suffer from an odd bug thanks to powermizer. It downclocks the gpu so much that Aero (the graphical UI of Vista) becomes choppy and doesn't look the way it should. The reason it smooths out after a little bit is because it takes powermizer a bit of time to finally "upclock" so things are smoother.

Personally, the benefits of the 169.xx drivers are so great, that I live with this odd powermizer bug. It should be fixed soon. You can btw disable powermizer in the .ini settings, but I'd strongly recommend you don't if you're using the G1S as a portable system (meaning running on battery) since it will always be at full speed which will drain the battery faster. Your other option is a previous driver.. But again, 169.xx has far greater support for mobile gpu's, not to mention being able to overclock.
