I have been having problems with my g50 overheating its gpu to temps of around 110 celsius, I took apart the chassis to look at the thermal assembly and in between the chipset and the copper heatsink is a blue-ish material with fibers in it and it has a consistency of foam/clay, I have never seen thermal paste in this state/form before is this supposed to be there or did they assemble it wrong? Also all the drivers have been updated to the newest supported releases.

The chipset is supposed to have a thermal pad there. It's perfectly fine. I would suggest doing a copper-shim-sandwich, but a thermal pad works just fine.

But that's besides the point. if your GPU is the thing overheating, you should first make sure dust isn't clogging your fan. After that, repaste the GPU with a good TIM, like AC MX-3. (I would suggest using a copper shim, too, since the heatsink tends not to sit flush on the GPU die.)
