hey everybody![]()
I have now one day my asus g50vm notebook but i already rapidly noticed that it became very hot. The average temperature 10 minutes after starting up was for the cpu 100 degrees (211°F) and from the gpu 130 degrees (266°F).
Gladly I would know from other g50v owners what their temperatures are.
My notebook enters in every way for breakdown service/replacement because my hard disk has broken down by the heat.
Also I wanted to reinstall windows but in the middle of this process my notebook shutted down by the heat. So there is like a half windows on it atm. I have an European model (I live in Belgium, so excuse me for my bad english) with the following specs:
Asus g50V
os: vista hp 64bit
cpu: Intel T9400
Gpu: nvidia 9700m Gt
Hdd: 2* 320GB
Ram: 2*2Gb DDR2 800mhz
centrino 2 platform
For the non-believers i also have a screenshot of the temperatures.

So my questions are:
1: Is this a normal situation?
2: What are other g50v owners their temperatures (in idle)
3: How is the asus customer service?

Pjj, does the fan even run? With those temps, I wouldn't be surprised if it's a broken fan, or if it doesn't run at all due to a bug.
Do you have a stock install? Did you install any power management software (like NHC, SpeedFan)? If yes, remove ASAP.
You might also try:
- reset BIOS to default settings
- upgrade BIOS if there is a newer version available
- reinstall ATK drivers, if you can enter Windows at all
If none of these solutions succeed in bringing those temps down, then I would just send it to ASUS. If it's new, you may even try to return it to the store where you bought it.
About support. Your notebook will probably be sent here (Netherlands), as from several other European countries. Feedback on ASUS NL varies, some experiences are bad, others reasonable. -
Those are insane temperatures. When I had my G50, my CPU cores were idling around 36/33C and my GPU idled at 44C. When gaming the GPU never went above 72C.
-
That's why I said I suspect the fan isn't working at all.
-
I touched the grill on the bottem from it, and i almost burned mij hand. But now that i see other peoples temperatures i'm sure that it's broken and i will send it back to asus. My second hdd had broken down anyway so i don't have a choise.
'Asus No. 1 in quality and service' I hope that the service is better than the quality ive got now -
Yep, send it. Don't even start it up anymore... I think the fan is not running.
-
hey let us know how your experience with Asus service/warranty turns out. It would be helpful.

Good Luck. I love the relatively low temperatures of my G50V. Sounds like you got one of those rare lemons perhaps? =o I am very happy with my G50V purchase and I hope that you can join that crowd soon.
-
my idle temperatures are
CPU: 36 -39 celcius ( full load at 44 c)
GPU: 63- 65 celcius ( gaming T 76-81 c)
i have the X1 at Bestbuy -
Yep, insane temps....let us know about the replacement!
-
I have send a email today, hopefully i receive soon a good answer !
I shall call on wensday, don't have much time atm.
i keep you guys uptodate -
2nd HDD also eh - glad you send it back. How old is it?
-
It has been on like 2 maybe 3 hours.
-
I think it's best if you call to arrange an RMA, whenever you have the time.
-
Jep i'm going to call the asus customer service tomorrow during my brake.
-
I've received a mailreply from ASUS today. They instructed me to return the notebook to the computershop through which I purchased it. I bought it DOA (Death On Arrival). So I've returned it and will probably receive a brand new laptop, but this won't happen in the very near future since they only have a very limited stock at the moment.
Nevertheless I'm satisfied about the ASUS-service and the shop in which I purchased the notebook, they both didn't give me a hard time en I'll probably get what I want, a new notebook. -
Alright, good luck! Hope you get the replacement soon.
-
Good way to look at it Pjj. I Hope you get to gaming on your new laptop soon. I am really thrilled over this laptop.
-
how do you check the temp?
-
silverio i get similar stats to your but i am playing world of warcraft not in idle.
-
i was jsut idling
I shut off my laptop last night and only turned it on again today (4pm) and the temps have gone down to 30 degrees for cpu, 50 for GPU
Some of you may have read that i had concerns for my cpu, because it would run at 100% continuosly, will i found out that my cpu only acts like that when the laptop heats up to those temperatures (which is after a few hours of being on)
I dont know if this is normal or not... or what to do about it...
any advice is welcomed -

Silverio, do you have Norton installed? There was a thread in here somewhere about the x64 version of Vista being incompatible with Norton, and it consuming a large percentage of CPU power. If you have it installed maybe you can try uninstalling it, and seeing if that fixes the heat issue. Just an idea, good luck.
-
nope i uninstalled it a long time ago
temps now after 2 hours running are 40degrees cpu, and 60 degrees GPU -
is it a known fact that norton messes up vista?"

I don't have first hand experience. But this is the link to the thread I was mentioning:

man this is rly weird... temps keep jumping.. right after a cold boot everything is fine, but after 5 hours or so, the processer gets locked at 100% and the temps lock at 50 cpu /60 gpu
this happening to anyone else? -
Here are my idle temps (G50V-A1):
Cores: 44 an 49 celcius (113, 120 F)
GPU: 61 celcius (140 F)
HD: 41 and 42 celcius (105, 107F)
Are those normal or above average temps?
Thanks -
have you been gaming? or idle?
-
This is after opening the computer and let it idle for 20 mins. No gaming. What do you think?
-
Update on my laptop-issues: Asus is prepared to give me a brand new notebook. But considering the small stock, I will receive it in 1 or 2 weeks. Still, no more malaise from my side.

Severe overheating here...
CoD4 gets the GPU up to about 90C and GTA IV kicks it up to 106C!!!
Idling around 60/65C. Taking it to ASUS tomorrow, will see what happens. -
I have the same issue, WoW gets me up to 106C using HDMI out to my TV. I will contact them as well!

Even though this post is old: For all the people with overheating problems, first thing to do is to make sure your computer is not clogged up with dust (fan blades and heat radiator/fins near the fan).

It does sound like the people in this thread had this happening while the laptop was new/fairly new though. -

In Vietnam, I cannot buy even a can of compressed air. I went to a lot of big computer stores in my city (the biggest city in Vietnam), they don't know what is compressed air. When I asked for something to clean dust from electrical equipments like graphic cards, motherboards..., they tell me to buy some cans like Dust-Off or McKenic Contact Cleaner & Lubricant. But inside those cans is not air, there are some chemicals. Can I use them?

If the fan is removable, you're lucky -- remove it and you have easy access to all the dust-ridden surfaces. If it's not, then you'll just have to go among the fan blades, with care so that you don't damage the fan.
This "low-tech" method cleans much better than any can of compressed air, which basically just spreads the dirt around inside the computer. -
Now this is after Gaming. I played Nascar Racing 2003 For like 10 Minutes. Its risen to 141 as I type now, and it keeps rising and falling. Nothing Below 100 ever since I stopped gaming. The only dusty parts in Laptop are CPU Fan, But Im going out to buy a Dust Can later on tomorrow. I also Plan on purchasing a Cooling Pad. [Zalman NC-2000] Right now it sits 3 Inches off my Wooden Desk, aided by Bottle Caps.
Any suggestions?
p.s - Sorry for Large Picture, But I dont know how to attach files for Large Pictures. And I wanted you guys to clearly see the numbers. If someone could tell me how to do so Id gladly appreciate it -
1) this thread is 6 months old,
2) wow that's hot... almost certainly not from dust. probably better sending it to asus. even the hdd's are on fire. -
Well I knew it was old, but since it was related. I didnt wanna start another Forum topic. To be told to use the search function. So I just posted it here.
I believe it was the HDD test I was running last night that caused that heat, Cause as we sit now after being on for 15 Minutes its just fine

Core 1: 59
