I have the logitech x-540 5.1 speakers. It's got the three analog cables, the orange black and green audio cable. I thought this laptop had the auto sensing thing that would switch the mic to center/sub and stuff like that but when I plug everything in it still only gives me stereo output.
I've tried different driver versions too. Any way at all to force 5.1 out of this and switch the mic input to center output and the same for the other port?

there are a lot of USB external sound dev that have those 3 dedicated jacks.
google it and you will find some. -
Actually it depends from the audio source. If you have a stereo MP3 then you will not have 5.1 sound. I know that with the Realtek software you can force an output (Manually switch from MIC to Speaker). Also, I know that there is some software or plugins that "simulate" 5.1 sound. I know there is a way to play sounds through all speakers but not in 5.1 mode. I mean that youll hear the same stuff from the front right speaker and the rear right.

SPDIF optical with a mini toslink connector (as you can find here http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10229 ) is your only option for onboard surround output.
As far as analog is concerned, the advice above is about your only option. Get a usb or firewire sound card.
Asus g50vt x1 - No 5.1 audio? =(
