So i hooked up my g51vx-rx05 through HDMI to my reciever. Video worked flawlessly, but apparently only stereo audio works with HDMI on it.

So i'm reading that i need some sort of spdif or something cable to get 5.1 audio.

Now could someone post a link to the cable i need please?

Also, could you kinda explain how it works? What if a dvd i'm watching as DTS 5.1 audio? Will it play that, or only dolby 5.1? I'm a little confused here.

    Thanks for any help.

I believe you need to go into the sound properties and select 5.1 output. Im at work right now or I would check to see what steps you need to take.

My first G51 was a BB model and I had no problem outputting a multi-channel signal via HDMI into my Denon 2809CI AVR. It displays both the input and the output and I was seeing 5.1 coming in when the source material was generating it (i.e. don't expect to get the windows "beep" in 5.1 surround).

My new G51-X1A has not been set up in my HT yet but I will check unless someone else provides the direction.

Yes I had the same issue... HDMI is stereo only on ASUS. U need the SPDIF cord (Optical cord that goes in headphone out port). I got a cord on ebay for like $6 amd it gives me great 5.1 sound. ^_^

You probably won't need this, but just in case here's what I use:

I've got a 24" LG monitor without HDMI so I run HDMI-DVI cable to the monitor and use the USB soundblaster with my older 5.1 speaker set that does not have SPDIF inputs. If your system has SPDIF inputs then you can connect directly without any more hardware (except the SPDIF cable of course).

Here's a link to SPDIF cables at Newegg.com:

Those newegg cables look like normal optical cables. How would that fit into the jack in my laptop? I think i need something different?

I hope you found the solution already... it's a minitoslink to toslink cable. the minitoslink is a 3.5mm optical cable that fits into the spdif output on the laptop.

This sucks - I wonder why you can't output surround through the HDMI out? Mine is locked down to stereo. Is this just laziness with the driver or is it a hardware limitation?

Can't you select it in the Realtek HD audio manager?

    Hey dune10191 - I also have a g51-vxa1 ;)

The dolby digital starts glowing for a bit when I select it but doesn't really seem to do anything. The box right above it where you've selected 5.1 - mine won't really let me select it. I select it but then it drops back to one of the 2 channel modes.

May I ask which exact sound and video drivers you use? Maybe that's my problem? Also, I assume you aren't able to choose more than 2 in the speakers dialog correct?

Here's a pic of what my dropdown looks like in the HDMI settings.

Here's the speaker tab. Greyed out so I only have stereo out.

For sound drivers I'm using the stock RealTek 6.0.1.5845 that came with the laptop.

The video drivers I use are the Dox's 185.85 customized ForceWare mentioned in this great G51 guide.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks - are you able to select dolby digital and have it stick - i.e. if you exit and re-enter hd audio manager, surround is still selected? I can't.
