My keyboard back light doesn't activate, not even on boot up. pressing fn + (f3 or f4) changes the software settings as it says on screen for keyboard brightness for it's four settings. I recently got it fixed because the port on the laptop that connects to the power cord broke, when that happened I removed the hard drive. I tried reinstalling atk and that didn't work (I had version 1.0.0008, but now I have 1.0.0023). I checked the bios which is version 205, and on the Asus website, there is no newer version for g73Sw.

I had the same problem, found that the tiny cable that connects to the back of the keyboard was upside down. The little tab that sticks out should be on the bottom side, next to the motherboard.

It certainly sounds like the cable that MrComputers mentioned. Either the connection is not seated properly, or - worst case - the LEDs are faulty and the keyboard may need replaced.
