Looking at all the new Asus laptop models coming out, it seems they are pushing 14" as a larger netbook with the ULV80 1.3Ghz cpu? 210 gpu and the 16" is reserved for gaming with 2.4-2.8Ghz and better 240-280 nvidia?
I previously had a Dell Vostro with a 1.6Ghz, 2Gig, 8600 GT but it was hefty and unwieldy. After getting a new work Dell 14" laptop, the size was very portable. I then got an Asus N80VN-X5 14" 2.4Ghz C2D, 4gig, 9650 nvidia and love it "except for the vent on the right side blowing on my mouse hand".
Does anyone know of a 14" model that is gaming? 2.4-3Ghz cpu, 4gig ram, better than 9650 nvidia video? I really like the ULV chassis, but that CPU seems undersized 1.3-1.7Ghz, and the video is a half step backwards.
I play on a laptop tray in bed, or sitting on the couch, with AC plugged in. Just like to be comfortable in front of the tv. I gave up the computer desk in the corner of the basement.
So accept 16", hope for ultra thin/light? Just playing WoW so maybe 1.3-1.7Ghz, and a mid level video card is ok?
Appreciate what folks seeing on the horizon for Asus 14-16" laptops.

The U and UL series are meant for portability and affordability, not gaming. With that being said, it seems they don't have an entry in the 14" gaming series, only starts at 15.6".

I am typing on my n81vp-d1...Check it out...It is a great gaming laptop for a 14 incher.
The new model they have is the n81vp-d2 with Windows 7....
Highly recommended....
Check out the config. in my signature. -
Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
those n81vp-d1 specs look very nice for a 14"

Yah those N81's came out shortly after my N80, but they're built on the same platform with the heat vent exhausting on the right. A couple hrs of gaming and having it exhaust on my hand gets old fast.
I'm leaning towards the ULV and hoping 1.3-1.7Ghz with the onboard/210 video is enough. Or jump to the 16" new models. -
That will only be good for some very basic gaming....a 210? That is not that great for any newer game...I really love the n81vp--- A 9650m gt is way better then a 210...Why would you want to downgrade?

Asus X83VP-A1 anyone?
I've not seen anyone talk about this model yet. From what I can tell it's new and yet to be released.
Compared to an N81 it has a P8700 2.53ghz processor instead of T9600 2.8ghz. Screen res is listed as 1280x800. HD is 500gig 5400rpm. Most importantly it has an ATi 4650 like the N81 Priced a bit lower than N81. With the processor it should have better battery life and heat management than N81?
Looks pretty desireable, only no one has seen it yet I don't think.

I got an x83 for my wife, she plays sims3 on it. I might throw crysis on it tell you guys how it goes. I notice there arent too many write-ups or threads on the x83.
-
Can you tell me about battery life, heat and fan noise on the lap for usage like web surfing and watching a movie? -
I think that screen resolution is pushing it to annoying status...It is not high definition at all.

I Do Not Want The Asus Platform With A Heat Vent On The Right, Like 80% Of Most People, I'm Right Handed. The Asus designer who said lets put the heat vent on the right despite no other laptop having it should be shot.

Hey Napalm Death, i'm in the exact same boat, i've been lugging around my 7lb Vostro 1500 for the last 2 years, it has a 8400m, i threw a T9600 2.6ghz in there and it can handle Fallout 3 at med. settings, but i'm looking for a more portable / powerful alternative.
the X83vp-A1 looks almost identical in specs to the N81vp-D1/D2 but what i'm worried about is the LCD quality. Seems Asus is hit and miss with the LCDs on their models, some have really bad contrast and viewing angles from the reviews i've read
but what i'm curious about is the screen on your x83, is it LED backlit, and how is the contrast & viewing angles?
- Thanks
p.s. the UL80vt is a great deal for a 4lb 14" laptop with switchable discrete graphics and light gaming (DX9 and some med quality DX10 like fallout3?) and has 10 hour battery life when it switches to the HD4500! But all the reviews say the LCD completely sucks when it comes to contrast and viewing anglesi was gonna get this until i read that

I would probably still recommend to go to 15'' with something like Asus G60VX-RBBX05 $999 or Asus G51Vx-X3A $1249, but if you really dont want to enter the 15''+ laptops, probably consider ASUS N81Vp-D2, but you might get away if you dont raid25 with a ASUS UL80Vt-A1. -
what games are you trying to play?? the 210M plus 1.3 ghz c2d should be more than enough to play most games at medium. any game older than 2 years can be played on high. most games within the 2 year window can be played on medium. The most recent games and next gen can be played on low. Which it seems should more than fit ur needs if all you want to play is wow.

I too am looking for a 14" portable Laptop that can play Games like MW2, Borderlands, and Crysis! Have yet to find a 14-14.9" with the 260m gpu though.
Cards in order of greatness woudl be good for the Laptops..
GTX 260M
GT230m
GT210m
where does the ATI series of GPU's fit in there -
I have a W3J with right hand side vent, works well.
