I just purchased an Asus UX302. I updated Windows 8, and then upgraded to Windows 8.1.

I want to create a restore disk and Asus recommended their own utility Backtracker. So far so good, BUT...

they added: "back up and create the system image before you upgrade to Windows 8.1 since the upgrade may delete the recovery partition."

It took hours to uprate Win8, followed by another lengthy wait for 8.1, then add the time spent installing my apps and games--and they say I cannot use this utility with Windows 8.1! This is most disappointing.

    1. They decide not to provide a Recovery Disk on DVD--then you would expect them to provide a utility that works with the latest version of the Windows OS. This OS was released to manufacturers last August so there has been more than adequate time.

    2. Can anyone shed any light on their comment? Or, has anyone used this utility with 8.1--and what happened?

You should be able to use backtracker to get the recovery discs created, if not then doing a reset PC will still allow that to work.

I have tried ASUS Backtracker Version 2.0.3 and 3.0.3 and have the same problem.

Also I have treid to create recovery media using the Windows 8.1 Setup program as described in Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Microsoft Windows Help

This fails because the Products key I have retreived is not recognized. I Wonder how this is possible.

Supposedly the key can be recognized by Win8 and Win8.1 if it's the same edition.
Did you upgrade to Win8.1 through Microsoft Store? Or did you upgrade it manually using a medium?

Those were the solutions from ASUS but if they didn't work then please contact ASUS directly to see what can be done to get it working.
Or check if ASUS can send you the discs instead.

Hi, your message is a bit old, but I finally fixed my problem!

I encountered the same problem, found it was a real pain to get tools that do not work. My UX51VZ was sent twice to Asus for repair, both times problems with Hard-Disk. Now that I have it back, I tried to make a backup with Backtrack and it did not work!!! Waiting for anwer from the support line for days and days, I finally upgraded to 8.1 (factory reset is 8.0). Backtrack was able to generate the Driver USB stick, but not the backup of the recovery volume. I was very surprise that it finally worked with following: "compatibility menu" to "execute as admin" and "run in windows 8 mode". Surprisingly everything worked with this setup. I just wonder why this is not mentionned in any document from ASUS !

    Good luck!!

That's odd, but it is a good thing that you were able to resolve it.
