I recently bought an asus m50vm. I have had no problems with it until now. It has never run higher than 10% of cpu.

Today it went and deleted all my desktop items. I can't create any shortcuts or drag anything onto the desktop. When I run firefox with only 2 tabs open that aren't doing anything it still takes up 30% of my cpu.

Now asghost.exe keeps running and taking up about 15% of the available cpu.

Any suggestions on what is going on?

    Thanks,
    Adam

That's asus security center messin with ya, try uninstalling it unless you actually set it up and use it. In that case, I'm useless for info cause I've never used it except to hit the uninstall button :p

Thru 'Programs and Features' which is the vista equivalent of Add/Remove programs in prior versions of Windoze

Hmm, nice link btw on firefox, will have to remember that one, sounds gnarly

Is this what I want to uninstall?

    Asus System Protect Manager

I used that fix I found on the website and it took care of my firefox memory and cpu problem.

Any suggestions on why I can't add anything to the desktop? Somehow it removed all my programs and won't allow me to make any shortcuts.

Yes, that's it. I had the name sort of mixed up I guess.

I removed the security center and restarted the computer. When it restarted the desktop items appeared for a second then went away.

What can I do to get them back or be able to add new shortcuts?

It isn't something silly like unchecking the "Show Desktop Icons" is it? Try right clicking on the desktop and check under View.
