If you have the cable, then why not try it yourself?

In my experience, this only works with some older ATI cards, but no recent ATI or Nvidia ones. The card has to have the signaling component built in. They don't do that anymore.

There are, of course, external boxes that will convert your VGA into anything you want: component, composite, DVI or HDMI. But they're much more expensive than a cheap VGA to Component cable. If you've got an HDMI out, your best bet would probably be an HDMI to Component adapter. They are relatively cheap.

Monoprice has the best prices for stuff like this if you're still interested.
