My asus m50sv hard disk died (250 gm 5400 rpm). Not to upset though, had all data backup, and also the Asus service center is located a block away from my apartment :) they'll change the harddisk and get it back to me monday morning 3 days turnaround. would be quicker but it's the weekend). What worries me though, is I never had a hard disk die on me so soon ( have only had the laptop for 6 months). Always kept cool and never been subjected to shock or anything. The quickest a hard disk have died on me was a desktop harddive that died after 3 years. I have two other laptops, a sager which 5 years old, and a toshiba which is 6, both which i still use, and never had the harddisk fail on me yet.

it does happen! i see it more often then you because we actually repair these things. You should always have an incremental backup if you have important files
