    Hello,

I've recently purchased a M50vn asus 15" laptop. It comes with 4gb, dual core duo, PM45+ich9 and vista 32bit (yeah I know).

I'm getting some system freezes, fairly random although they usually seem to be happening in pairs one after the other. It's frustrating because I can't really pinpoint the problem.

I run a mem test for an hour successfully and sisoft sandra's tests are fine. The freezes don't seem to be coming from 3D applications (as I've used some games without problems) but seem to happen when running a lot of i/o intensive appls (I was running an antivirus test as well as copying files).

I'm currently using all asus drivers. I'm trying to solve it by updating the chipset video and audio drivers to the latest from intel nvidia and realtek however I stumbled across an interesting fact:
my current bios is 210 meanwhile the latest on asus's website is 209...
I wonder whether it would be wiser to go back to a tested and released version instead :)

Lastly I can't find the pm45 and sata drivers on the intel website. Any help?

    Thanks a lot :)
    Luca

Updated Intel matrix storage drivers are always a good idea. They're full of bugs, *sigh* just look at the release notes...

the bugs are minor at best. 999 out of 1000 wouldnt even know they had the bug. I havent updated mine lately though you are right sometimes (rarely) intel has been known to fix significant bugs. Their products and chipsets generally are reliable and require few corrections. I wish more companies would adhere to their standards and support.

I've had problems with the intel storage driver frying my G50 RAID array's metadata. Problem was reproducible, luckily they fixed it shortly after I got my G50. I'm not blowing smoke...

not familiar with it. We do ship them with raid. Have not run into any issues thus far. Like i said its probably something most people would not notice or be affected by. nothing is perfect, ever.

    Thanks for your support,

Since my system freezes from time to time, I just wanted to upgrade to the latest drivers and take it from there, hopefully that'll fix it

In fact I believe my system was shipped with a rather old version of sata matrix drivers and the fact that I'm on vista doesn't really help here.

Lastly I'm quite surprised to have found that the bios shipped with my laptop is not available on the asus website (I'm on 210 the rest of the world is on 209)...
It doesn't sound too good to me

    Cheers

i can only guess this is an overseas model akin to m50vn in the states,
when it freezes does the mouse hang too or the mouse is still working? have you tried running diagnostics like seatools or memtest?

I guess it's the UK model,

Yes the mouse freezes as well. I've run memtest, vista memory test and sisoft sandra burn-in and it works fine

I've also noticed that the intel chipset driver bundled with my laptop hasn't been released on intel website as yet, same goes for the bios... either my laptop came back from the future or something is weird here :)

in bios is the hdd controller set to ahci/enhanced or compatible/ide? It should be set to ahci / enhanced
also can you restore factory defaults in the exit menu of bios?
