I've read here and there that Asus makes laptops for other companies (like sony and dell). They make the insides and the other companies just make the outside chasis right? Is there anywhere I can look to see which companies uses Asus stuff and for which models?

Please move if this isn't the right place to post this question.

    Thanks!

PowerBooks, A few SONY VAIO's, HP/Compaq, were to make ThinkPads(No more though, Lenovo took over and canceled I would assume), and soon, Dell.

Basically, they give ASUS a idea of what they want, and ASUS makes everything, gives it to them and they rebrand it as their own. The PowerBook is the only exception, Apple makes all the plans, designs, materials specifications, etc. and ASUS only builds it.

Just to make clear, "everything" should be interpreted as "everything not easily removeable".

Final retailers often perform the final customization of the product by putting in the hard drive, optical drive, battery, and sometimes memory and CPU.

Nope. Asus makes the chassis when they are the ODM. The actual chassis of many IBM, Apples, etc are made by Asus, not to mention most motherboards in all notebooks.

I read somewhere that Compal has made a few IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads. Any truth to that?

Also, I hear Quanta is also an ODM for many mainstream manufacturers.

Compal has some time in the past.. the ODM tends to change when contract expires.. other than Lenovo.. the other most recent ODM IBM used was LG. Compal does stuff with Dell currently (along with Samsung.. and in the future Asus). Sony renewed its contract with Asus I believe..

Quanta is the largest ODM in the world, so I'm pretty sure they make for many many mainstream manufacturers.

Hm. So does this mean that for those laptops where Asus is the ODM, the build quality should be roughly the same as Asus branded laptops?

I have heard that ASUS only started their laptop business just before taking over a small laptop manufacturer (was it Elite?) in Taiwan something like ~6 years ago and boom the business after taking over the small firm.

I doubt it. Asus must follow the specs given by the customer. A lot of times (probably all) a major spec is a price-point. Ferrari might have great build quality, but if they are hired to build cars for somebody else with a price-point of 40K, they won?t be the same quality.
