    Hey guys,

I have a problem. Summary: motherboard or graphics card on my Asus Lamborghini dying 2 times in a row now.

So I bought a Lamborghini VX1 last New Year's. It was working beautifully until early June. Then, half the time I booted it up, it'd show me a gray screen that slowly faded to black. Eventually, the times it did boot up, the display would start flickering several minutes into use and the system would start locking up. Soon enough, it was unusable.

I sent it in to Asus and they replaced the motherboard. It worked beautifully for another many months...

Until now. I got the gray screen twice yesterday and once today. I'm afraid this is the start of another cycle and my warranty just ended.

    My questions:

    1) What kind of user-side problems might be causing this? I use it all the time and carry it everywhere, though I never bang it against things. Is it possible that I'm overstraining the notebook?

    2) Does the Asus VX1 have some kind of motherboard or graphics card issue that's causing it to do this?

Thanks for taking the time to answer a noob.

Hi, I never heard this particular problem mentioned but the VX users are pretty rare... so who knows.

I don't think you caused it in any way. Except perhaps overheating the notebook because it wasn't cleaned of dust regularly. I can imagine that the VX gets hot since they are typically souped-up machines, right?

    But even that is unlikely.

Probably some component on the MB is too weak and fails repeatedly.

You can probably get a motherboard off the ASUS estore and replace it yourself. Hell, get two for the next replacement, as well -- joking :)

It will be a few hundred bucks, and it requires a bit of handling and patience to replace. AND a disassembly manual.

Or you could send it in for OOW (out of warranty) work in which case you pay some 70 EUR (how many dollars? have no idea) extra for shipping and work.

    Thanks for your reply.

The VX1 tends to run pretty hot, yes. I didn't dust it for a while so maybe that's what's up.

The main board from the estore is $330 so I might consider doing that. I just wish my $2500 laptop was a little more durable than this thing.

If they've changed the motherboard I'm not sure if they don't have to give you again a new warranty period for the motherboard. Depending on were you are based (and the consumer laws that are applied), you might be able to request a repair under warranty of the motherboard. Since you say that the latest motherboard was replaced in June, if you had 1 year of warranty for all electronic devices in your country, you might still say that the latest motherboard is still under warranty. In addition, see if in your country the warranty time stops counting when you send the laptop for repairs. At least in Portugal, when you send something for repairs under warranty, the time during which the product is being repaired isn't considered for the overall warranty period.

You're not alone: check this thread.

    Good suggestions, certainly worth exploring.
