I recently got the asus n550jv and I was excited to hear the quality of the speakers because they were advertised so well.... but I was disappointed. I don't find the speakers that great and I dont think my subwoofer works. When you plug in the subwoofer is something supposed to pop up on the screen letting you know that the subwoofer was detected?
I contacted asus tech support but didn't get any answers. I upgraded to Windows 8.1 and downloaded the recent October 2013 audio update but I still don't notice a difference in the audio when I plug in the subwoofer.
Anyone else experiencing this problem? Where else can I test my subwoofer other than a laptop?

System recovery?! Well when you get it back, do let us know what their verdict was. We haven't had any calls/inquiries about the subwoofer, but if this happens to become a prevalent thing, it would be good to know. Good luck!

hi, just received mine yesterday. I did a fresh install of Win8.1 PRO and I have troubles with the drivers. Windows see the playback configuration only as 2.0 and not 2.1 and this means NO subwoofer. Also at login I have a blank screen, I put it to sleep and at wake up welcome screen apears

illusion86,
Was this a problem on Windows 8 (before the 8.1 upgrade)? -
Where do you see 2.0 vs 2.1? My subwoofer is working on 8.1 with the latest Realtrek drivers. Do you have the Realtek HD Audio Manger in the systray? That's the software that displays notifications when you plug in subwoofer or headphones. Not sure if it was possible for drivers to have been installed w/o the Audio Manager.

I don't know if it's coincidence, but I tried all of the above but couldn't get the sub woofer to work. While doing something else, I completed the Windows Media Player setup and the sub has started to work fine.

I just got a new N550JV and have the same problem. Also, the keyboard volume control function keys (mute, volume down, volume up) don't work either. I got a custom laptop with Windows 7 64-bit installed from XoticPC, so I suspect there may be a driver problem.
Anyone know if I can install the Realtek drivers for Windows 8 that are available on the Asus support website? I'm waiting to hear back what XoticPC says...
Thanks,

With the subwoofer plugged in, pretty much all sounds will come from it so if it is sitting silent, then yea it is not working right. Windows 8 SHOULD do one of its device popups when you plug it in too, just like the headphones jack.
Keep in mind however, your speaker config does not change, there is no such thing as 2.1 in windows eyes. What happens is the bang and olufsen icepower chip (It is an amp for the realtek HD audio) does a low frequency filter pass and sends that out to the subwoofer. This is how all 2.1 speakers work, they still receive just 2 channels, but using a filter they can split the frequencies up. In this way however there is no driver support. Aside from windows knowing the jack ex hist, it seems to be handled entirely with the icepower chip and not windows or realtek HD audio.
If windows does not sense the jack being plugged in then the problem is a broken jack. (The jack does show up as one of 2 jacks in the hd audio config). BTW be sure you are pressing it in all the way! I know some of you are scared to death about jacks that are stiff. My q550lf has a pretty tight jack that I need to rotate to get the last mm in. -

So many inquiries were turning up on this that we wanted to see whether there was a design fault or just some idiosyncrasy to it. It turns out that the connection is a bit "stiff," if you will. Anyone experiencing no output from the subwoofer and no popup notification in the system tray notifying that it has been connected is probably not inserting the plug all the way into the jack. No part of the plug should be visible; the strain relief should be flush with the body of the laptop.
Hopefully this helps.Last edited: Feb 25, 2015 -
Thanks, everyone, for the good info and tips.
I got my subwoofer and function keys working after talking to a tech at XoticPC. Turns out that because I had asked for a bare-bones installation of Win 7 on my machine, I was missing the necessary drivers to run the subwoofer and keys. Once I installed the Realtek audio driver and Asus ATK package, everything worked fine! No problems now. -

You are intentional gimping your cpu's capabilities with windows 7. Your battery life must suck balls too. -
Hi, I just found this thread after losing sound from my sub-woofer. I am running Windows 8.1 and have all of my drivers up to date. Funny thing is, none of that mattered. As stupid as it seems just opening up the Realtek HD Audio Manager pops the sub-woofer back on for me. I have to do it every time I restart my computer so it's kind of annoying but not so annoying that it is a deal-breaker. You can see in the manager if the laptop is registering your sub-woofer at all; In the right-hand side of the manager there is 2 analog circles that are displayed, representing your sub-woofer and headphone jacks. They will darken when they are in use.
I hope this helps anyone who comes here in the future. -
(Solved) Hello every one. Thank you abbrakadaver.Yes in realtek hd audio manager at up right hand there is a folder like thing. click on it . a dialogue comes and says do you want to popup when you plug in any external audio device? click ok and plug in the subwoofer. one of the two circles under that becomes darker and the subwoofer is detected. enjoy
