I am torn between these two options.
I am most likely to watch movies and do very light gaming on my laptop (WoW/Civ etc).
Would a 900p vs 1080p res difference matter on a 17.3" screen for watching HD movies?
Would a i7-740QM vs i5-460M make a huge difference for the kind of usage for me - the most power consuming work I might do is rip DVDs and doodle around with GIMP.
The price difference between the two is around 300EUR now...
But I plan to use this laptop for another 5 years or more. Meaning I buy not for current usage but it needs to scale up for future apps etc.
What do you think? Should I go for the JF or wait for the new JQ series?

Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
wait for sandy bridge, the N73sv has been spotted and is a quad, with 2ghz of clock (i7 2630qm)

I had the same question, about whether to go with the n53jf or jq. Since I'm concerned about performance I'm waiting for Sandy Bridge to come out, around February with Asus. But since you're doing light gaming and multitasking the dual-core vs. quad-core issue wouldn't matter too much. I think the i5 should be good enough for general multitasking. The current i7 will be outdone in a year or two anyway, and from looking at benchmarks at notebookcheck.net the i7-740qm is only a little more powerful than the i5-460m. So if you're not looking for performance it probably won't be a big deal. I would save your money. But if you want you can wait for Sandy Bridge, it's up to you. That's my opinion.
Going from 900 pixels to 1080, I'm guessing you might notice it on a 17.3" screen, but it probably won't be dramatic. It might come down to a personal preference, the extra 180 pixels wil make things smaller, but for movies it will make things a little more sharp. I would probably get it if I was getting Bluray with it. -
I've decided to wait for the N73SV. The JF model I was thinking of doesn't have a bluray player. I'm sure it'll work for now, but I don't think it'll scale up well in the future. I expect this laptop to last for another 5 years or so. So I might as well get the best performing laptop now. I believe the SV model will cost around the same price or maybe slightly higher than the JQ model, so I think its better for me to wait for the SV.
The only problem is that Asus is extremely slow to release new models.
I wish I was working as a sales or marketing executive of that company.
They make great laptops but suck at getting it out soon in the market...especially in Europe.
