The memory is located under the cover on the bottom BUT you MUST go under the keyboard and relase three screws holding the cover on ! Madness but that's how it is. I asked them and they said it's just stiff - work around and the flap will come off...it did...shattered three screws holding it

I need FU:LL instructions about removing and replacing the hard drive........it also needs to have keyboard removed and am not sure where the latches are

This machine has been a pain since I bought it to be honest and now the hard drive will not stay stable....have recovered three times from the factory restore but still no joy so now think the HD is bad.

Just replaced the screen a week ago too ...next time I go Toshiba

Mail me at [email protected] if you can help please

Many thanks......yes....I know the reason they did it but their own support guys had no clue about it

Anyway....can you tell me the maker of the hard drive ? I do not have the machine at hand (I am on the road) but want to d/l a makers HD diagnostic and test

    Thanks

The problem is that there is no guarantee that all N76 will have the same exact drive in them. You have a good chance of it being either seagate or western digital. My G73 had seagate drives in it, but I have seen some Asus notebooks with Hitachi, and WD drives as well in the past.

Like tijo said it could be different brands. PC manufacturers don't stick with only one supplier for HDD, RAM, touchpad and screens. they advertise the capacity and speed of the HDD not brands.

If you replace the hard drive, it's simple to find out the make and model of it based on the sticker/label on it once you access it. But you don't need to match the exact make and model of the drive - the replacement just needs to be compatible.

Well so far so good.......8 reinstalls from the Restore partition and non lasted more than a day. I d/l a Win7SP1 iso from Digital River and did a clean install after format and after a couple of hesitations it took and completed. It is a Seagate drive so am currently running a long scan using Seagate Tools.

I had already done a checkdisk with the full scan and recover bad sectors but that didn't help. I suspect the MBR may have been badly mangled somehow if this fix takes !

Checked and re-seated the drive and it is firm, next step will be to run Memtest on the 6GB chips and I will report back in case it is of help to anyone else

Can anyone advise the minimum Asus drivers to download please....currently of course it is running on generic Win7 drivers

:) If you run the Windows 7 update tool, it should yield a few drivers in the hardware category. Otherwise, the essentials are: chipset (first), network adapters, and video and sound. Ideally you want all of your drivers covered though - but you don't need the Asus proprietary software utilities/bloatware.

OK did that....a clue to the whole mess may be that there were two newer BIOS updates so I did the last one. Now have almost all Win updates in except net framework 4 (I hate that and not sure what use it is !!)

Today is it running faily stable....not happy with any multi-tasking but that may be it is busy with 'stuff'

As an aside.....I am reluctant to dive under the keyboard to fill that RAM slot so as an exercise I took one 4GB chip from the lower set and repalced it with a matching 8GB and the machine recognised it as a total of 12GB....wonder if it will take more LOL. My Toshiba was rated at a max of 8GB and I have 12GB running....the i7 chipset (later versions) will take 16GB as will Win7 64 so worth a try ! Many boards were mass produced but not tested to use 8GB chips as they were not commonly available but if the wiring was in place you may be lucky

The hesitation when multi-tasking is a slight worry but we shall see. I ran the "Activation Token Manager" Back-up which made transfer of the Win 7 iso installation and activation from the OEM reg codes to the retail ISO simple...no online phone calls etc etc
