I have a asus zenbook with windows 8.1. I'm would like to restore my computer to it's factory settings, meaning that I would like to erase everything. This process was quite easy when I had windows 7, but when I press f9 during the startup process with windows 8.1 I go to the windows recovery mode instead of the asus recovery mode. Anyone got an idea of how I should do it? I just want to restore my first harddrive, not the second one which contains all of my important files.

    Regards

What if you take out the second hard drive and try it with just the one you want to format in.

    I don't think that will work, it's built in. It's one C: and D:

Hi! The new Windows 8.1 has a built-in recovery system that allows you to recycle your computer and start from the very beginning as if it came out of the box for the first time. This means that everything will be like brand new.

Be aware though, that this would remove everything in your hard drive. So if you have important files in your D drive, then you should back that up first. I am assuming that C and D are partitions of ONE hard drive; if the D drive is another separate hard drive, then I you should take out that second hard drive first and reinsert it after reinstalling Windows.

    To do this:
1.) Go to your Charms Bar and select "Settings"
2.) Click "Change PC Settings" on the very bottom
3.) You will be redirected to the PC Settings Metro App and from there choose "Update and recovery"
    4.) Now click "Recovery"
5.) On the second header, it will state "Remove everything and reinstall Windows"
6.) Click "Get Started" and follow the instructions from there.

Alternatively, if you want to install a Retail Version of Windows 8.1 (like a CD installer that you buy in a store), just let me know and I'll give you instructions here.

As an alternative to domu's instructions to access the recovery, you can also open the Search function in your Charms bar, then search for "reset."

Choose "reset" to restore the laptop to factory settings and remove all of your personal data. If you choose "refresh," that is not the same and your data will be preserved.
